cavalier sports DECEMBER 2020 9 LIA GODFREY — SOCCER The first-year forward/midfielder from Flem- ing Island, Fla., was tabbed as the ACC Freshman of the Year Nov. 13. She joins Becky Sauerbrunn (2003), Jess Rostedt (2005) and Morgan Brian (2011) in earning that honor for Virginia. Godfrey played in all 12 matches with 11 starts for the Cavaliers this fall. Her six assists led the team, were tied for second in the ACC and also tied for third nationally. Three of her six assists came on game-winning goals, and she also tallied three goals and 12 points. In addition, Godfrey was also named to the All-ACC second team and the league's All-Freshman squad. Joining Godfrey with All-ACC honors were third-year forward/midfielder Alexa Spaanstra (first team), third-year forward/midfielder Rebecca Jarrett (second team) and second-year forward Diana Ordoñez (second team). First-year Samar Guidry was also named to the All-Freshman team. SAM HAUSER — BASKETBALL The fourth-year forward from Stevens Point, Wis., was a popular pick on watch lists for na- tional awards during the beginning of the season. He was one of 50 players named to the watch list for the 2021 John Wooden Award (nation's top player), one of 20 on the watch list for the 2021 NABC Divi- sion I Player of the Year, one of 50 on the watch list for the 2021 Jersey Mike's Naismith Trophy for Men's Player of the Year and one of 20 on the watch list for the 2021 Julius Erving Small For- ward of the Year Award. Hauser, who sat out last year after playing three seasons at Marquette, led the team in scoring (14.5 an outing) and was tied for the lead in rebounding (6.8 a contest) through four games as of Dec. 14. He was shooting 58.5 percent from the field and 43.8 percent from three-point range during UVA's 3-1 start. RILEY SMYTH — GOLF The third-year golfer from Cary, N.C., was one of 20 players named to the watch list for the 2021 Annika Award, which is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding female colle- giate golfer. Smyth did not compete during the fall for UVA after having her spring season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She had a breakout week at the U.S. Women's Amateur in August, finish- ing tied for fifth in stroke play and advancing to the quarterfinals of that event. In early November, she won the Golfweek Carolina Country Club Amateur. During the 2019-20 campaign, Smyth finished second on the team in stroke average (73.50). She led UVA in scoring at the Windy City Collegiate with a career-best 6-under-par 210 to finish third, and also posted top-10 showings in the Tar Heel Invitational (ninth) and the IJGA Collegiate Invitational (10th). CHARLES SNOWDEN — FOOTBALL The fourth-year outside linebacker from Sil- ver Spring, Md., put together a monster game against rival North Carolina Oct. 31. He notched 10 total stops and a career-high four sacks, plus a forced fumble that led to a touchdown in UVA's 44-41 victory against the then-No. 15 Tar Heels. Snowden's sack total was the most by a UVA player since Jamie Sharper had four against the Tar Heels in 1996. It was also the most sacks by any player this year in Football Bowl Subdivision to date. He became just the second ACC defender to record four sacks in a game over the past two ACC seasons. Snowden is only the 11th ACC player since 2000 to record four-plus sacks in a game. Despite missing two contests this season, Snowden finished with team highs in tackles for loss (10.0) and sacks (6.0), and was tied for fourth in total stops (44). HOO'S HOT Recognizing the "Who's Hoo" in UVA athletics — Cavalier student-athletes, past, present and future who are making news around the world of sports. "I told our team I valued their feedback, and I wanted this to be their decision. Just as we met at the beginning of the year to make the choice to play, this was their choice to end the season at this time. I think it is appropriate for this team. "They have all grown tremendously from the challenges put before them this year. But now is the time to return to families and loved ones. This team will always be special for how it handled competing during a pandemic. It is one more example of the amazing capacity and leadership of the young men that allow me to coach them every day." — UVA football head coach Bronco Mendenhall on his team's decision to bypass playing in a bowl game this year 1 The national ranking for the Virginia women's swimming and diving squad in the 2020-21 preseason poll released by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The Cavaliers' first No. 1 ranking came in November 2015 after they defeated Tennessee, Michigan and Penn State to open the season. The UVA men were ranked No. 13 in their CSCAA preseason poll. "Jack had an extraordinary love for the university — and UVA basketball. He always had that special twinkle in his eyes. He was a great American." — Virginia associate athletics director for development Barry Parkhill on JOHN PAUL "JACK" JONES, who passed away at age 100 on Nov. 21 PHOTO BY MATT RILEY/COURTESY UVA
