WOMEN'S SOCCER Senior captains Sam Co6ey and Kerry Abello were selected in the 2021 National Women's Soccer League dra8 on Jan. 13. Co6ey was chosen with the 12th overall pick by the Portland Thorns, while Abello was taken with the 24th pick by the Orlando Pride. With the selections of Co6ey and Abello, the Nittany Lions have had at least one player chosen in every NWSL dra8. Penn State is one of only three programs in college soccer to have a player selected in each dra8. Co6ey, who earned All-America honors in 2018 and '19, has been one of the most dynamic players in col- lege soccer. In 2019, her 5rst season at Penn State, she 5nished second in the Big Ten in points with 32, netting 11 goals and adding 10 assists en route to winning 5rst-team All- North Region and 5rst-team All-Big Ten honors. Prior to her time at Penn State, Co6ey played two seasons at Boston College, earning 5rst-team All-America notice in 2018. Abello, a two-time CoSIDA Aca- demic All-American, has appeared in 62 games with 43 starts in her three seasons at PSU. The Batavia, Ill., na- tive has scored 15 goals and added eight assists, has twice earned All- North Region honors and has been se- lected to a pair of All-Big Ten teams. Both Co6ey and Abello plan to play for the Lions in the upcoming spring season. MEN'S SOCCER Seniors Pierre Reedy and Brandon Hackenberg have been named Penn State's captains for the 2021 spring season, as selected by their teammates. Reedy will be a team captain for the second consecutive year. He earned preseason All-Big Ten honors in 2019 and went on to total four assists, in- cluding one multi-assist game. Hackenberg enters his 5rst year as a FOOTBALL 4-5, 4-5 OCTOBER 24 L at Indiana........................................... 36-35 (OT) 31 L OHIO STATE................................................38-25 NOVEMBER 7 L MARYLAND................................................ 35-19 14 L at Nebraska............................................... 30-23 21 L IOWA......................................................... 41-21 28 W at Michigan................................................ 27-17 DECEMBER 5 W at Rutgers....................................................23-7 12 W MICHIGAN STATE........................................ 39-24 19 Big Ten Champions Week – East vs. West W ILLINOIS.................................................... 56-21 MEN'S BASKETBALL 3-5, 0-4 NOVEMBER 25 DREXEL.......................................................Postponed 28 W VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE......................86-65 DECEMBER 2 W VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH......................... 72-69 6 L SETON HALL........................................98-92 (OT) 8 W VIRGINIA TECH (ACC/Big Ten Challenge).......75-55 13 L at Michigan................................................ 62-58 23 L ILLINOIS.................................................... 98-81 30 L at Indiana........................................... 87-85 (OT) JANUARY 6 at Ohio State............................................... The Hawkeyes would be coming o6 a national championship, and the Nittany Lions would be getting set to greet them with a deafening crowd, most likely at the Bryce Jordan Center. But 2020 did not go as expected, to put it mildly. Iowa never won that title, as the college wrestling season was shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic shortly before the top-ranked Hawkeyes could take the mat at the NCAA tournament last March. And when they visit Penn State in February, there won't be a raucous crowd on hand. Other than the athletes, coaches, o7cials and support sta6ers, the venue will be empty. Still, assuming that it's able to be held (Penn State was forced to miss its opener at Rutgers on Jan. 16 due to positive coronavirus tests within the program), this is a pretty big event. Iowa is ranked atop this year's polls and will be favored to successfully defend the Big Ten championship that it won last March and claim the national crown that it was denied. But second-ranked Penn State can never be counted out. In fact, thanks to the shutdown, the Nittany Lions are still the defend- ing national champs. –M.H. N O T E B O O K SEE NOTEBOOK PAGE 58
