WORLD CHAMPIONS Thanks to help from a quartet of Wolverines — from left to right: freshman forwards Matty Beniers and Brendan Brisson, U-M assistant Kris Mayotte and sophomore defender Cam York — Team USA won the 2021 World Junior Cham- pionship with a 2-0 victory over Canada Jan. 5. Mayotte served as an assistant coach for the squad, while York was the team captain for a unit that won its final six contests after a 5-3 setback against Russia in its opening game of preliminary play. The Americans outscored their six foes 33-5 after that. Across the seven games, York tallied one goal and five assists — the latter tied for fifth at the event — and he finished second among all de- fensemen in points. Meanwhile, Beniers posted a goal with two assists, and Brisson notched a pair of goals. It was the second time Mayotte helped guide a gold-medal effort on the junior level and the third time he assisted a medal-winning squad (also won a bronze in 2018). The triumph also increased the number of junior medals won by Michigan players representing America to 20. PHOTO BY KRIS MAYOTTE/COURTESY MICHIGAN ATHLETICS THE BIG PICTURE
