80 THE WOLVERINE MARCH 2021 BY CHRIS BALAS M ichigan class of 2021 signee Caleb Houstan is Rivals.com's No. 8 overall recruit nationally in his class, and he has continued to show why. The Montverde (Fla.) Academy standout, a 6-8, 200-pounder with arguably one of the best shooting strokes in the country, has led his squad to a 22-1 record (as of Feb. 11) this season for one of the nation's top prep schools, including an out- standing showing at the Montverde Invitational Feb. 4-6. Rivals.com national recruiting ana- lyst Rob Cassidy caught him live and was extremely impressed. "Caleb Houstan had arguably the day's best individual performance," he said after seeing Montverde fall to Bel Aire (Kan.) Sunrise Christian Academy. "Obviously, the five-star prospect would have preferred it not come in an overtime loss, but the stat-stuffing effort was wildly im- pressive, nevertheless. Houstan kept his team in the game by scoring 19 points to go along with 10 rebounds and three steals. "The crown jewel of the Wolver- ines' top-ranked class, the No. 8 player in the country looks ready to contribute in the Big Ten today and his trajectory is even more encourag- ing, as he seems to be developing at a rapid pace from both a strength and skill standpoint." The writers at PrepHoops.com were equally enamored with his skill set. "In the first half you wouldn't have known that Caleb Houstan was a top-10 recruit. The 2021 Michigan commit made it apparent at the start of the third quarter as he erupted for 12 points in that quarter," they wrote. "The 6-8 power forward fits the new age game perfectly being able to play inside/out. "He couldn't buy a shot in the first half, but knocked down a couple of them in the third with his quiet me- chanics, got it all started by seeing the ball go through the net on a dunk followed by a couple of free throws. Michigan is getting a big-time pros- pect in Houstan." Houstan is one of 10 semifinalists for the Jersey Mike's Naismith High School Trophy given to the National Player of the Year. Stewartville (Minn.) High power forward Will Tschetter (6-8, 225, Ri- vals.com's No. 133 senior nationally) also continues to shine, as expected. He and his Stewartville team had one loss as of Feb. 11, the result of his point guard being out. Even then, he stepped in to man the position and provide the top performance of the week in his area per the local Post Bulletin. Tschetter averaged 34 points per game last year to lead the state in scoring. He was averaging close to 35 through eight games this year. "[Point guard] Nolan Stier was out, so Will Tschetter had to play point guard against one of the most vicious defenses in the state [Feb. 8]," the Post-Bulletin reported. "But he still managed to shine. The Stewartville standout scored 31 points and ripped down 20 rebounds in the 72-60 loss to No. 3 Caledonia. He was on pace for 40 points and 26 rebounds at halftime. "Tschetter 's midrange jumper was on fire, and he made two deep three- pointers, too. Tschetter has packed 20 pounds of muscle onto his frame, and he's really developing into a superstar." They added "it's almost expected that he's going to get 30 every single night … but let's not take him for granted. He's an exceptional, gener- ational-type talent." "He's the second-best player in the state, no question," Stewartville coach Adam Girtman said (Chet Holmgren, a seven-footer and the nation's top player is out of Minne- apolis Minnehaha). "You can't stop him. The only way to stop him is to put two guys on him. "Even tonight, he has 31 points and 20 rebounds with two guys draped all over him.
