In the final act of what is certain to be an NC State Athletics Hall of
Fame career, fifth-year senior Elly Henes won the national title in the
5,000-meter race at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships
June 12 in Eugene, Ore. It is the same event her mother and current Wolf-
pack women's track and cross country head coach Laurie Henes won an
NCAA title in at NC State in 1991.
Henes, a native of Cary, became the first athlete in NC State history to
be named the ACC Track Performer of the Year for both the indoor and
outdoor seasons. No Pack female had ever won the outdoor award be-
fore, either. Henes was previously named the ACC Women's Cross Country
Performer of the Year in 2019 when she won the conference title and was
an All-American following a 10th-place performance at nationals.
She concluded her career as a 10-time All-American, including five in in-
door track, three in cross country and two in outdoor track. She was a six-
time ACC champion, taking home the outdoor 5,000 meters and indoor
3,000 in both 2018 and 2021, and helping capture the indoor distance
medley relay in 2021, in addition to her cross country triumph in 2019.
