■ Happy Birthday
Former NC State baseball star Trea Turner turned 28 years old
on June 30. What better way to celebrate than by making history.
Turner joined Adrian Beltre, Babe Herman, Bob Meusel and
John Reilly as the only players in Major League Baseball to have
hit for the cycle on three different occasions. Turner earned a
spot in the exclusive club when he hit a triple in his fourth at bat
during a 15-6 win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Beltre and Turner are
the only two on that list that played baseball after 1940.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, Turner is the first MLB
player to ever hit for the cycle on his birthday.
As of July 1, Turner was one of only three players in the majors
to have collected at least 100 hits thus far in the 2021 season and
he was second with 18 stolen bases. His .318 batting average was
ninth in all of baseball and third in the National League.
During all that, Turner kept an eye on the Pack, often tweeting
about his former team during its run to the College World Series.
