22 SEPT. 18, 2021 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED Stats: The two teams struggled to get anything going offensively. Notre Dame had 59 yards, while Toledo totaled just 21. Items: Notre Dame junior punter Jay Bramblett recorded a 58-yard punt (three yards shy of his career long) early in the quarter … Graduate student Jona- than Doerer missed what would have been a career-high 55-yard field goal. FOURTH QUARTER NOTRE DAME 32, TOLEDO 29 Top Moment: Mayer's game-win- ning touchdown. Coan had to pop a dislocated finger back into place with the help of a trainer on the sideline just before he threw the seam route on the money to Mayer with 1:09 remaining. Feature Performer: Coan went 4 of 4 for 65 yards with a touchdown in the fourth quarter, despite ceding plenty of playing time to Buchner. The mettle he showed by going 3 of 3 for 58 yards with a touchdown on the game-winning drive was exactly what Kelly was look- ing for in that situation. Stats: The offensive onslaught from both teams resulted in 181 yards from To- ledo and 174 from Notre Dame. The Irish had a pass-heavy attack with 128 aerial yards, while the Rockets ran for 113 yards. Items: Doerer made a 38-yard field goal to give Notre Dame a 17-16 lead with 12:25 left in the game … Buchner connected with sophomore running back Chris Tyree on a 55-yard touch- down pass to extend the Irish advantage to 24-16 with 10:57 left … Notre Dame allowed a 67-yard running play to To- ledo running back Bryant Koback, who scored on an eight-yard shovel pass five plays later … Toledo could not convert on the two-point conversion attempt and thus still trailed 24-22 with 7:48 left … Notre Dame sustained a drive into To- ledo territory, but Williams fumbled and gave the ball back to the Rockets at their own 33 with 3:26 remaining … Toledo converted on third-and-12 from the 50 and punched in a go-ahead touchdown with 1:35 remaining … Notre Dame's game-winning drive ending in Mayer's second score of the game spanned just three plays and 26 seconds. ✦ TOL ND FIRST QUARTER ND Mayer 4-yard pass from Coan (Doerer kick) 12:45 0 7 Drive: 6 plays, 75 yards, 2:15 TOL Cluckey 31-yard field goal 10:06 3 7 Drive: 7 plays, 69 yards, 2:32 TOL Cluckey 32-yard field goal 4:14 6 7 Drive: 6 plays, 42 yards, 2:49 SECOND QUARTER ND Williams 43-yard run (Doerer kick) 9:21 6 14 Drive: 5 plays, 96 yards, 2:13 TOL Cluckey 23-yard field goal 1:04 9 14 Drive: 10 plays, 35 yards, 4:00 TOL McDonald Jr. TD INT (Cluckey kick) 0:46 16 14 FOURTH QUARTER ND Doerer 48-yard field goal 12:25 16 17 Drive: 13 plays, 55 yards, 6:11 ND Tyree 55-yard pass from Buchner (Doerer kick) 10:57 16 24 Drive: 1 play, 55 yards, 0:09 TOL Koback 8-yard run (Bradley pass failed) 7:48 22 24 Drive: 6 plays, 89 yards, 3:03 TOL Finn 26-yard run (Cluckey kick) 1:35 29 24 Drive: 7 plays, 73 yards, 1:51 ND Mayer 18-yard pass from Coan (Davis pass to Williams) 1:09 29 32 Drive: 3 plays, 75 yards, 0:26 TOL ND Total First Downs 16 27 Rushing 4 10 Passing 9 13 Penalty 3 4 Rushing Attempts 31 39 Yards Gained Rushing 168 188 Yards Lost Rushing 36 56 Net Yards Rushing 132 132 Net Yards Passing 221 317 Passes Attempted 32 36 Passes Completed 19 24 Had Intercepted 0 1 Percent Completion 59.4% 66.7% Yards Per Attempt 6.9 8.8 Yards Per Completion 11.6 13.2 Total Offensive Plays 63 75 Total Net Yards 353 449 Average Gain Per Play 5.6 6.0 Fumbles: No.-Lost 1-1 2-2 Penalties: No.-Yards 11-99 3-27 Punts: No.-Yards 7-318 3-148 Average Per Punt 45.4 49.3 Average Net Punt 42.6 49.3 Punt Returns: No.-Yards 0-0 0-0 Kickoff Returns: No.-Yards 3-58 1-19 Interception Returns: No.-Yards 1-27 0-0 Fumble Returns: No.-Yards 1-2 0-0 Miscellaneous Yards 0 0 Possession Time 30:04 29:56 Third-Down Conversions 7-17 8-14 Percentage 41.2% 57.1% Fourth-Down Conversions 0-0 0-1 Percentage 0.0% 0.0% Sacks By: No.-Yards 6-37 5-25 NOTRE DAME 32, TOLEDO 29 Sept. 11, 2021 ✦ Attendance: 62,009 ✦ Notre Dame Stadium ✦ South Bend, Ind. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Tot Toledo 6 10 0 13 29 Notre Dame 7 7 0 18 32 Graduate student Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa made just two stops in the game, but both were sacks and the second one forced a fumble that sealed the Irish victory.
