www.BLUEANDGOLD.com SEPT. 25, 2021 7 UNDER THE DOME get the opportunity to play a little bit more," Kelly said. "Joe is well-suited at the position he's going to play, more Z, more X." Colzie and Styles, each a top-150 re- cruit in the 2021 class, are unlikely to redshirt this year. Keys' and Watts' de- partures give them a path to more op- portunity. Styles played one snap at Florida State, while Colzie played none. The next week against Toledo, though, each recorded their first career catch. Styles' was a two-yard reception, while Col- zie posted a seven-yarder. They played seven and six snaps, respectively, against the Rockets. "They're ready to play," Kelly said. "Let's get them going. As I told [offen- sive coordinator] Tommy [Rees] and [receivers coach] Del [Alexander], it's their time. With the veterans we have, it's going to be a nice mix and exciting mix." How often they play remains to be seen, though. Austin, Lenzy and Davis are entrenched. Austin looks like the No. 1 target he was long rumored to be, with eight catches for 154 yards and a touchdown through two games. Davis led all receivers with 119 snaps in the first two contests. Lenzy played 103 in that span. Wilkins played 32 snaps off the bench in his first two games and had a 23-yard touchdown reception at Florida State. Keys, meanwhile, played just five snaps in his lone game before leaving the team. Watts did not see the field on offense before moving to rover. The void their departures created is more a depth hole than it is a rotation gap. It's rare to find six- or seven-man receiver rota- tions in college football, especially on a team that doesn't start four wideouts and uses tight ends as often Notre Dame does. That could mean the bit roles Col- zie and Styles played against Toledo might be their freshman-year outlook. At the same time, they're an injury or another departure away from a much larger workload. As odd as it may seem to move Watts from a position already thin on num- bers, Notre Dame wouldn't have done it if it didn't have a group of seven it trusts. Linebacker is similarly thin, with seven scholarship players. Kelly even called receiver a "log jam," an indica- tion Watts has a clearer path to seeing the field this year on defense rather than offense. Notre Dame has to hope that theory holds true the rest of the year. If it does, the rash of injuries that has hit other positions — including linebacker — will have spared the wide receivers and avoided disaster at an important spot. "We feel really good," Kelly said, "about where we are at the wide re- ceiver position." But the season's first week reinforced one lesson: sudden change is always lurking. ✦ 1. Publication Title 2.
