www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 2, 2021 13 UNDER THE DOME THEY SAID IT THEY SAID IT "Grit. He's gritty. … He's like a Navy SEAL. I hate to make football comparisons to war or those who have served because those are the true warriors. But if you want to talk somebody who can lock it in and go to the next snap and not have any kind of doubt, that's Jack Coan." — Notre Dame graduate student offensive lineman Josh Lugg when asked to describe graduate student quarterback JACK COAN "Kevin works as hard as anybody we have in our program. His work volume is always as high, if not the highest, of anyone we have. He probably didn't play up to his standards. I don't know that anyone needed to remind him of that. He's a guy with a lot of pride who wants to perform at the highest level. He went back to work, practiced really hard and prepared really hard with that in mind that he wants to make an impact in this game [versus Wisconsin]." — Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly on senior wide receiver Kevin Austin Jr. after he went without a catch despite eight targets against Purdue "We're transitioning on the offensive line, but we're so excited about the young players and the veterans who are playing their butts off as we go through it. [Freshman guard] Rocco Spindler is making great progress. It's one of those things where we have to be patient and work through the process. Some guys are holding down the fort for us as we grow up." — Kelly on Notre Dame's offensive line prior to the matchup with Wisconsin "It's less about what it might lead to for us than where the industry is going. It is moving to streaming. In some number of years — and we can disagree about how many years that is — NBC will be Peacock and ESPN will be Disney+. We can all see this in our own lives. The percentage of programming that we consume on a streaming basis versus a traditional broadcast basis is growing. So, we know it's going there. The question is how to we position Notre Dame to take advantage of it and be a leader. "We have always been a leader in media — the first national broadcast network that was truly national, the Sunday morning games with Lindsey Nelson, the original NBC agreement. This is what we've always done. It's my job to make sure that we continue to do it, to be in the forefront of the movement in media. We have to be prepared for that. We wanted to be first. We wanted to show that Notre Dame could lead and lead effectively. And we did. We had great results in terms of participation. "Long term, the two things that most excite me about this are: 1) Our ability to do additional programming. … Next, streaming lets us know who's watching the game. You can't get that information on a linear broadcast. And if we know who's watching the game, we can communicate with them more effectively. We can allow them to be in a position to shape our broadcast, tell us what they're looking for. … And while it wasn't perfect — we had glitches — as far as live sports programming on streaming goes, it was a home run." — Notre Dame director of athletics Jack Swarbrick on the Peacock experiment for the Toledo game and where it might lead (South Bend Tribune) PHOTO BY CHAD WEAVER OF THE WEEK "We #staNDtogether.
