30 CAVALIER CORNER & VAF NEWS NOTABLES In the August 2021 Cavalier Corner article, I up- dated our VAF donors on the new Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) legislation that went into effect on July 1, 2021. In that article, I touched on "Pathways," the athletics department's student development and leadership program that will include NIL resources for UVA student-athletes. In this article, we would like to outline how VAF donors can engage with UVA student-athletes through Pathways. Whether you're interested in engaging in Name, Im- age & Likeness opportunities, or connecting around shared interests in academics, career, community engagement, leadership, or personal development, Pathways is our hub for interaction between student- athletes and alumni, faculty, community organiza- tions, and of course you, our donors. To offer any service or opportunity, simply go to athletics.virginiasports.com/pathways/users/ sign_in to create an account and begin by checking out our NIL resources under the NIL tab at the top of the page. Once you've familiarized yourself with the rules, laws and policies we are bound by at UVA, feel free to return to the main welcome page and click "Submit a New Opportunity" at the bottom on the left. When you enter the opportunity form, you'll be prompted at each step to make selections, add infor- mation, include links, and ask questions before sub- mitting to our staff. Once submitted, your entry will be reviewed by our staff, who will reach out to you to answer any questions you listed and/or confirm that the submission has been approved. Once approved, your submission will appear in the overall student-athlete menu so those interested in the opportunity may indicate their interest. At that point, our staff will connect you with the interested student-athlete, and you'll be encouraged to engage. You can create as many opportunities as you wish, and you can manage those opportunities over time by clicking "See My Submitted Opportunities" at the bottom of our welcome page on the right. We look forward to receiving your ideas and con- necting you with our student-athletes! If you have any issues or questions, please add them to your submission or reach out to us directly via email at nil@virginia.edu. NAME, IMAGE AND LIKENESS (NIL) UPDATE ERIC BAUMGARTNER Associate Athletics Director for Compliance COMPLIANCE CORNER The University was recently certified to establish charitable gift annuities for residents of California and New York. Chari- table gift annuities (CGA) to the Virginia Athletics Foundation allow you to provide future support to Virginia's athletics pro- gram while producing payments for you and/or your loved ones and tax deductions and benefits for you or your estate. Pay- ments can be fixed or variable and current or deferred, depending on your needs. A CGA is created with a simple contract. In exchange for your gift of cash or stock of $5,000 or more, the University of Virginia Foundation (UVAF) pays you and/or your loved one a fixed annuity for life. At the end of the contract term, the remainder will be used by the VAF for the purposes you specify. Rates range from 3.7 percent to 8.6 percent and depend on the age(s) of the annuitant(s). Each annuitant must be at least 55 years old when payments begin. A portion of each payment will be tax-free income. If you fund your CGA with appreci- ated stock, you will avoid a portion of the capital gain and defer the rest. You can select the CGA that works best for you: • An immediate payment CGA begins making payments immediately. • A deferred CGA begins making pay- ments on a future date you select. Deferring your start date can yield a higher rate and larger charitable de- duction. A flexible deferred CGA allows you to select a range of future dates on which your payments can begin. Below is a sample rate and payment chart for a $30,000 gift annuity. For calcu- lations specific to your age and situation, please contact the VAF at 434.982.5555.
