OCTOBER 2021 1 Dear Cavalier Fans, We have entered the fourth quarter of our fundraising year and are working hard toward a strong finish to 2021. Our efforts for the next few months will focus on several key areas including the Annual Fund, the Football Opera- tions Center as part of the Master Plan, and Endowed Scholarships. At the end of September, we paid the University over $8.5 million for our fall semester scholarship bill. With your help, by the end of this academic year, we will fund $22 million in scholarships for our student-athletes. The Annual Fund continues to be the primary source of scholarship funding for the athlet- ics program, with a smaller percentage funded by endowed scholarships. The Annual Fund also provides funding for operational budget support for our Olympic sports, as well as the academic support for our student-athletes. Thank you for your generosity that allows us to fund these critical areas. President Jim Ryan announced at the September Board of Visitors meeting that the University was adding $50 million to the Bicentennial Scholars Fund, which pro- vides matching funds for new endowed scholarship commitments. Gifts of $100,000 or more to create new athletics scholarships are eligible for a 50 percent match, amplifying the impact on Virginia Athletics. In 2021, donors to the Virginia Athletics Foundation (VAF) have committed over $5 million to establish new athletics scholar- ships and secured an additional $2.5 million in matching funds. With the recent addition of funds to this program, there is even more opportunity to create a lasting legacy on Virginia Athletics. We continue to make progress on the Athletics Master Plan and the next phase — the Football Operations Center. In this issue, you will find updated images and projected floor plans. This ambitious project is critical to the future success of Virginia Football and Virginia Athletics as a whole. Each fall, we enjoy honoring our milestone donors, which this year would include donors who have reached 40 and 50 years of consecutive giving. Due to COVID-19, we did not have the opportunity to celebrate this group at a dinner or on the field at a home football game. We have postponed these opportunities but remain grateful and humbled by their support. Donor giving histories have been officially recorded since 1971. This year, we have 183 donors who have given for 50 years in a row since 1971, and an additional 54 who have reached 40 consecutive years. We are fortunate to have such a loyal group of donors who have made an incredible impact on Virginia Athletics. Their commitment is amazing! Lastly, you will notice a change in this and future Cavalier Corner magazines. The printer is experiencing staffing issues, and while it has normally taken less than a week to print each issue, it now takes weeks or longer. Our only option for mailing the magazine in a timely manner is to change printers and use non-glossy paper for the inside pages. I hope the new paper type does not take away from your enjoyment when reading about UVA Athletics. This change does allow us to add four pages to the magazine, giving us more space to highlight the Hoos! We are honored to have thousands of donors who support our student-athletes in so many ways each year. Each contribution, regardless of the amount or the area of support, helps our programs, and we are grateful for the generosity of all VAF donors. Thank you for your championship support!
