44 OCT. 30, 2021 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED FOOTBALL RECRUITING ROUNDUP RECRUITING NOTES • Lafayette (La.) St. Thomas More's Walker Howard, the nation's No. 2 pro-style quar- terback and No. 26 overall player in the 2022 class per Rivals, was going to visit Notre Dame for the Cincin- nati game Oct. 2 but suffered a fractured fibula the night before. He canceled the visit to South Bend, but going into the Oct. 23 weekend, Blue & Gold Illustrated is reporting that Howard, who is com- mitted to LSU, would be tak- ing an official visit to Notre Dame. There is turmoil at LSU with head coach Ed Org- eron being fired in-season, and Howard may be looking for a new home. It will be tough to flip How- ard because his father, Jamie, was a quarterback for the Tigers from 1992-95. • If Notre Dame can't land Howard, sources tell BGI that Draper (Utah) Corner Canyon's Devin Brown, the No. 4 pro-style quarterback and No. 48 overall player in the land, could be the next prospect the Irish target. Brown is a longtime USC commitment, but the Trojans also are looking for a new head coach with Clay Helton being let go earlier this season. Notre Dame has a commitment from Oradell (N.J.) Bergen Catholic's Steve Angeli, a three-star prospect, and appears to want to take a second signal-caller in the 2022 class along with the Garden State standout. • Dating back to the summer of 2020, Fond du Lac (Wis.) St. Mary's Springs' Billy Schrauth, Rivals' No. 4 offensive guard and No. 125 overall prospect in the country, was considered a strong Notre Dame lean. How- ever, he took official visits to Notre Dame, Ohio State and Wisconsin this past June, and there was a feeling that the Badgers took the lead over the Irish. Things have shifted back into Notre Dame's favor, per BGI sources. Schr- auth was expected to be in South Bend for the USC vs. Notre Dame game Oct. 23 and was on commitment watch. • Notre Dame still has more work to do rounding out its 2022 offensive line class, but is working ahead on the 2023 cycle. Belmont (N.C.) South Point offensive tackle Sullivan Absher, who does not have a Rivals ranking yet, received an offer from Irish offensive line coach Jeff Quinn Oct. 21. Appalachian State, Duke, East Carolina, North Carolina, North Caro- lina State, Old Dominion and Virginia Tech also have offered the 6-7, 285-pounder. — Mike Singer Quarterback Steve Angeli, 6-3, 215, Oradell, N.J.
