Yet, there was something about Ogundeji that kept Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly invested in his proj- ect player. Dating all the way back to their recruiting courtship, Kelly never doubted that Ogundeji would eventu- ally arrive, even if the train might be a bit delayed getting to the station. "We saw that kind of personality that [Ogundeji] wanted to be great," Kelly explained. "Everything that he wanted to do was to be successful in the class- room, to be successful on the football field, to be successful in life. So, we saw that passion in him." Ogundeji didn't play as a freshman in 2016, the season the Irish limped to a 4-8 record. He appeared in five games as a sophomore but never cracked the starting lineup. Undeterred with limited snaps and a room full of future NFL defensive ends playing ahead of him, Ogundeji's work ethic and dedication never wavered. He recorded 22 tackles in 13 games as a junior backup in 2018, then added an- other 4.5 sacks as a fourth-year senior in 2019 before finally becoming a full- time starter in 2020 and the team leader with seven sacks and 28 yards lost. "That's what it all comes down to in life, growth throughout the whole time," he said. "It was a great time for me. I'm happy to be around great people, people I'm going to be with for life." For Kelly, he always called Ogundeji the perfect case study in what coach- ing attention and player persistence can create.
