DECEMBER 2021 1 Dear Cavalier Fans, The recent announcement of Tony Elliott as the new Fralin Family Head Football Coach has created a lot of excitement around the future of Virginia Football and the entire athletics department. We are all looking forward to the next chapter of Vir- ginia Football. As we enter the final weeks of 2021, our staff is thankful for the thousands of generous donors who contribute each year to support our student-athletes, coaches and athletics staff. This generosity is vital to the overall success of each of our 27 varsity sports. At the December meeting of the University of Virginia Board of Visitors, a tuition increase was approved for each of the next two years at 4.7% and 3.7%. This will add to our total scholarship commitment, which is approxi- mately $22 million this year and continues to be funded primarily by gifts to the Annual Fund. We have made good progress with new endowed scholar- ships that qualify for matching funds from the University. These endowments provide long-term funding for scholarships and lessen the pressure on annual giving. It would require an endowment in excess of $400 million to fully en- dow all of our scholarships! As new endowed scholarships are created and awarded to student-athletes, the names are added to our endowed scholar- ship recognition display on the lower-level concourse of the John Paul Jones Arena. It is an impressive group of donors and student-athletes. In our October issue of the Cavalier Corner, we shared new design images and projected floor plans for the next phase of the Virginia Athletics Master Plan — the Football Operations Center. Work continues on this exciting proj- ect, and I invite you to visit to see updates and other details. The Football Operations Center is critical for Coach Elliott and his staff in the recruiting of future football student-athletes and in the develop- ment of current players. Once the final fundraising results are complete at the end of 2021, I look forward to sharing our progress with you in the February issue. The ongoing generosity of our donor base has truly been amazing. We wish you and your family a happy and safe holiday season. Best regards, Dirk P. Katstra Executive Director P.S. This issue of Cavalier Corner features profiles of 15 of the many excep- tional UVA student-athletes that are supported by your donations.
