DECEMBER 2021 25 CABREL HAPPI KAMSEU Fourth-Year • Soccer Embodying the term student-athlete, Cabrel Happi Kamseu has been excelling academically and athletically during his four years with the Vir- ginia men's soccer team. He currently lives on the Lawn, a prestigious honor that only 54 students each year are selected to do. A forward for the Cavaliers, Happi Kamseu was a member of the 2019 team that played in the national championship game, only to fall in penalty kicks. He was credited with the winning goal in the ACC championship game that season as well. He has appeared in 49 matches with 19 starts and has nine goals in his career. Happi Kamseu is also a three-time ACC Honor Roll member as a kinesiology major with a 3.30 GPA. He was awarded UVA's Ernest H. Ern Jr. Award for outstanding contributions to student life as a junior and served as the president of UVA's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Getting the opportunity to be a student-athlete at Virginia and experience the full definition of what that means is not lost on Happi Kamseu. "Few are the scholastic institutes that provide student-athletes an opportunity to excel excep- tionally well both academically and athletically," Happi Kamseu said. "Not only does the University of Virginia provide its student-athletes this op- portunity, but it highly encourages their success in both fields. Hence, to me, being a student-athlete means I am in a unique position to use all the resources I have at my disposal to excel both ath- letically and academically at an exceptional level. "The platform I have as a student-athlete en- ables me to have an impact on Grounds and posi- tively affect change in people's lives, an endeavor I hold close to my heart." Following graduation, Happi Kamseu plans to stay at Virginia to work toward a master's degree and continue playing soccer as a fifth-year. He hopes to gain experience in the business realm, and is particularly interested in consulting because of its similarities to being a student-athlete and the challenges it presents navigating a myriad of situa- tions. He could also see himself in the social entre- preneurial/venture capitalist investing space. Whichever path he takes, the way he chooses to live will guide him. "The joy is in the journey," he said, "and the met- ric with which I will measure my success in life is the positive impact I have had on people's lives." — Kristin Thurman • Photo by Matt Riley/ courtesy UVA Athletics EXCEPTIONAL UVA STUDENT-ATHLETES
