JANUARY 2022 THE WOLVERINE 33   MICHIGAN FOOTBALL Defensive tackle Mazi Smith was the recipient of the Richard Katcher Award, given to U-M's most outstanding de- fensive lineman or outside linebacker. The redshirt freshman has registered 35 tackles, 2.5 stops for loss, four passes broken up, three quarterback hurries and 20 pressures while anchoring the middle of the line. The Robert P. Ufer Bequest, honor- ing the senior(s) who "display the most enthusiasm and love for Michigan," was shared between Ross and redshirt junior punter Brad Robbins. The Maize and Blue elected two hon- orees for the Dr. Arthur D. Robinson Scholarship Award, one for undergradu- ate studies and one for graduate school. Redshirt freshman defensive back Joshua Luther, an engineering major with a con- centration in computer and data science, was recognized for undergraduate stud- ies, while sixth-year senior center An- drew Vastardis, who's pursuing a mas- ter's degree of science and physiology, was the recipient for graduate studies. — Clayton Sayfie BLAKE CORUM'S BIG PLAYS AND HEART HELPED LEAD MICHIGAN TO A TITLE Second-year freshman running back Blake Corum spent several of the last weeks of the regular season in the train- ing room rehabbing a leg injury suffered Nov. 6. He went down early in a win over Indiana and didn't return, missing games against Penn State and Maryland before returning for the big one with Ohio State. Still playing less than 100 percent, Co- rum ripped off a 55-yard run against the Buckeyes that set up the first touchdown of the second half. That play helped pro- pel the Wolverines to the win over OSU, and his 67-yard touchdown run in the Big Ten championship game against Iowa set the tone in a 42-3 win. "It just took a lot of hours in the train- ing room with the trainers — a lot of rehab. I was trying to do everything to get back," Corum said after the win over Iowa. "I'm still not 100 percent yet, but I'm still going to get back into the train- ing room and rehab until it gets back to 100. "It was tough because I want to be out there with the guys. I want to be running behind 'V' [center Andrew Vastardis] and I want to be blocking for Cade [McNa- mara], making sure I pick up a block." His ankle has continued to heal slowly but surely, he reported Dec. 16. "It's getting there, you know?" Co- rum said. "I feel good. I don't know where I'm at percentage-wise, but I'm able to do the things I need to do, so I'll be good regardless." He was always confident his team- mates, veteran Hassan Haskins and freshman Donovan Edwards, would pick up the slack in his absence, and they did. "I always want to see other people be successful," he said. "That's why I think the team is so special— because we all want each other to be successful. We don't care who scores the touchdowns. We don't care who gets the rushing yards or the tackles, whatever it may be. "We just want to win. And when you want to win, you don't care." — Chris Balas JAKE MOODY WINS THE LOU GROZA AWARD Junior Jake Moody was as reliable as it gets for the kicking game this year, hit- ting on 22 of his 24 field goal attempts in 2021 while converting all 56 extra point opportunities. That consistency helped 2021 MICHIGAN FOOTBALL SCHEDULE Date Opponent Time (ET)/TV Sept. 4 Western Michigan W, 47-14 Sept. 11 Washington W, 31-10 Sept. 18 Northern Illinois W, 63-10 Sept. 25 Rutgers W, 20-13 Oct. 2 at Wisconsin W, 38-17 Oct. 9 at Nebraska W, 32-29 Oct. 23 Northwestern W, 33-7 Oct. 30 at Michigan State L, 37-33 Nov. 6 Indiana W, 29-7 Nov. 13 at Penn State W, 21-17 Nov. 20 at Maryland W, 59-18 Nov. 27 Ohio State W, 42-27 Dec. 4 Iowa (B1G Championship) W, 42-3 Dec. 31 Georgia (CFP Semifinal) 7:30 p.m./ESPN OFFENSE Pos.
