42 THE WOLVERINE JANUARY 2022 BY EJ HOLLAND W ith the first National Signing Day of the year over and done with, it's time to take a deeper look at Michigan's 2022 recruiting class. I spent a ton of time on the road over the last year and saw most signees in one or multiple set- tings, and also watched hours of film. Note that offensive lineman Andrew Gentry, originally a consensus top-150, four-star recruit in the 2020 class who has been away from football for two years while serving a church mission, is not included below since he has not been evaluated in so long. Here is a breakdown of how I would rank every other U-M signee: 1. CB WILL JOHNSON GROSSE POINTE (MICH.) SOUTH Consensus Ranking: Five-star (top 25 prospect nationally) EJ's Ranking: Five-star (top 25 pros- pect nationally) EJ's Evaluations: Game (four), Camp, 7v7 (four), Private Workout (two), Film EJ's Scouting Report: At 6-3, 190 pounds, Johnson is a tall, long corner with the skill set to make an impact at Michigan as soon as he gets to campus. At his best when playing press man. Uses his length, physicality and strength to smother opposing wide receivers but is rarely caught lunging or out of place. Uses his elite technique, patience and IQ to his advantage. Can take away an FOOTBALL RECRUITING Star cornerback signee Will Johnson is a five-star prospect and the nation's No. 23 overall recruit according to the On3 Consensus rankings. That makes him the Wolverines' highest-rated signee since Daxton Hill in 2019 (No. 8).
