90 THE WOLVERINE MARCH 2022   OLYMPIC SPORTS Women's Basketball U-M notched its second top-five win of the season and first ever at home with a 65-50 triumph over No. 5 Indiana Jan. 31 … The Wolverines picked up their sixth ranked win of the season with a 98-90 triumph over No. 21 Iowa Feb. 6 … That marked eight straight Big Ten wins, the longest conference win streak in program history. Men's Gymnastics The Wolverines knocked off No. 3 Nebraska, 409.100-400.350, Jan. 29, winning five events and three individual titles, as well as the all-around and hitting 24 of 30 routines (80 percent) on the afternoon … Two U-M athletes — fifth-year senior Jacob Moore and junior Paul Juda — placed in the top three in three different events. Women's Gymnastics U-M became the first team in the nation this season to break the 198-point barrier, with a 198.025-197.650 victory over No. 7 Minnesota Jan. 24 … That was the fifth time breaking the barrier in program history … The team set a program record and earned the sixth-highest score in NCAA history (198.525) while beating Rutgers and Alaska in the Rutgers Tri-Meet Feb. 4 … The Wolverines tied a school record with four perfect 10s in a single meet, and it marked the highest NCAA team score since 2004. Men's Lacrosse Junior Josh Zawada posted identical stat lines (five goals and five assists) in wins over Bellarmine (22-13) and Detroit Mercy (21-5) to open the season, setting the individual program re- cord for single-game points and assists. Women's Lacrosse Scored a program-record 23 goals in a 23-2 triumph over Detroit Mercy to begin the 2022 campaign … The 2-0 squad is ranked 11th nationally as of Feb. 14. Men's Indoor Track And Field At the Michigan Invitational Jan. 22, sophomore Dubem Amene slashed 3.5 seconds off his career best at 600 meters in a meet-record 1:17.41. He became the only collegian this season — and the only man in school history — to break both 1:18 at 600 meters and 21.30 at 200 meters. Women's Indoor Track And Field Senior Aurora Rynda's 1:27.05 in the 600-meter on Day 1 of the Windy City Invitational Feb. 11 established a school record and Canadian record (breaking a mark that had stood for 38 years), and was the best time in the world for 2022. Men's Tennis After a 1-2 non-conference stretch to begin the campaign, U-M opened the Big Ten season with a 4-1 win over defend- ing league champion Illinois Feb. 11 in Ann Arbor. Women's Tennis Michigan picked up two top-12 victories in the season's early going — 4-3 at No. 12 Georgia Tech Jan. 30 and 5-2 versus No. 4 California Feb. 8. Wrestling Michigan grabbed two ranked wins over the last month, the Wolverines' fourth and fifth of the season, beating No. 16 Minnesota, 20-14, Jan. 28 and No. 8 Nebraska, 20-13, Feb. 4 … U-M had three top-10 wins in the dual meet against the Golden Gophers. — Clayton Sayfie One in that camp is fifth-year senior Willie Weiss, who decided to return to the program after going undrafted in the shortened MLB Draft. The team's former closer, Weiss has worked hard at converting to a starter. The right- hander had 21 appearances with five saves and a 4-2 record a year ago. "Willie Weiss has great stuff, and in any other year, he would've been drafted — potentially decently high," Bakich said. "But for some reason, he slipped, and we got him back." Bakich insisted the youth on his team is talented, too, and he'll have to blend that with the experienced veterans. Still, he's excited about having so many proven commodi- ties back. "We will have a lot of experience with this particular team, which is not a predictor of success," the coach said, "but certainly we'd rather be experienced and deep in those positions than not." — Clayton Sayfie Junior second baseman Ted Burton (No. 3), a 2021 first-team All-Big Ten selection, led the Wolverines with a .342 batting average last season. Despite missing nine games with illness, he also was second on the squad with seven home runs and 12 doubles.
