High — class of 2022 quarterback MJ Morris and class of 2014 tight end Cole Cook. • J.H. Rose High in Greenville, N.C. — class of 2022 running back Michael Allen and class of 2014 defen- sive end Kentavius Street. BY MATT CARTER or the 2022 football recruit- ing class, NC State head coach Dave Doeren had no choice but to go with the smallest group of signees he has ever assembled while entering year 10 in Raleigh. In 2020-21, the NCAA froze eligibility for all but the spring sports, which had their eligibilities similarly affected the prior year after the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. The move left coaches across the country facing a looming scholarship crunch, for which the NCAA granted football teams a one-year reprieve from the limit of 85. Thus many teams, including NC State, played the 2021 season with more than 85 scholarship players. However, the NCAA is making that a one-year deal, leaving the Wolfpack and some others in a numbers bind. And Doeren was not happy about that. Not only did it affect college coaches, he said, but high school pros- pects, too. Some were left without op- tions because there were not enough scholarships to go around.
