Monkey Off The Back — Despite Michigan and Ohio State entering the final regular-season game with identical 11-1 records, and the contest being played at The Big House, U-M was a touchdown underdog to OSU Nov. 27. After all, entering that day, the Buckeyes had won eight straight and 16 of the last 17 in the series, while U-M had failed to play its best in the biggest one in quite some time. But behind a dominant rushing attack and opportune defense, it was U-M winning decisively, before claiming the Big Ten title the next week, topping the league for the first time since 2004. 2. Resurgent Defense — The Wolverines ranked among the top 11 nationally in total defense in each of former coordinator Don Brown's first four seasons, but fell to 84th in 2020, before he was let go. First-year coordinator Mike Macdonald's hiring turned out to be a smashing success, with the 34-year-old leading a turnaround for the ages. U-M ranked top 30 in the land for scoring defense (8th), total defense (20th), rushing defense (27th) and passing defense (27th). It yielded 30 or more points just twice, compared to doing so in four of six games the year prior. 3. Smashmouth Offense — Head coach Jim Harbaugh went back to his roots with an old-school, downhill rushing attack that produced 215.4 yards per game (15th nationally). That allowed the Wolverines to play their desired style of football, controlling the clock and holding leads.
