If the hype surrounding NC State fifth-year redshirt junior quarterback Devin Leary was not enough al-
ready, the ACC media provided a boost when their collective vote chose Leary as the league's Preseason
Player of the Year.
Leary received 40 votes to outpace Wake Forest signal-caller Sam Hartman's 30. Since the voting was
announced, Hartman has been declared out indefinitely with a medical issue unrelated to football. Mi-
ami quarterback Tyler Van Dyke rounded out the top three with 21 votes.
A total of 164 media members participated.
In 2021, Leary set a school record at NC State with 35 touchdown passes and had only 5 interceptions.
He is the only quarterback in Atlantic Coast Conference history to have at least 35 TDs and 5 or fewer
picks in the same season.
Leary was joined on the preseason All-ACC squad by four teammates: super senior center Grant Gib-
son, super senior safety Tanner Ingle, fourth-year junior linebacker Drake Thomas and fifth-year redshirt
junior linebacker Payton Wilson. The five NC State players were the second-most of any team in the ACC
behind Clemson's six.
Overall, NC State was projected to finish second in the Atlantic Division behind Clemson.
