Oregon ran for a whopping 351 yards on the Cardinal in a 45-27 victory for the Ducks Oct. 1. USC and Washington, meanwhile, beat Stanford primarily through the air. Caleb Williams and the Trojans passed for 341 yards and 4 touchdowns. Mi- chael Penix Jr. and the Huskies passed for 309 yards and 2 scores. USC ran for 164 yards. Washington ran for 169. When Stanford goes against competent opponents, the Cardinal can't keep up. "There is a separation between those three teams we played and us right now," Shaw said after the loss to Oregon. Shaw said it doesn't have to stay that way. Stanford can progress. But can it progress enough to compete with teams like Notre Dame on the road? Not if it doesn't dramatically improve defen- sively. And not if it remains as poor in the turnover department as it was through Week 5. Stanford was tied for dead last na- tionally in turnover margin (minus-10) at that point in the season. The com- pany? Temple and New Mexico State. Not exactly the programs Shaw wants to invite over for a holiday get-together. Stanford had only forced 2 turnovers, while coughing up 12. The 8 fumbles lost ranked second to last in the FBS ahead of only Northwestern. Another program that shouldn't be high on the invitation list.
