PSU Connection Helps Lift Portland To NWSL Championship Two former Nittany Lions won championships in October with the Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League. The Thorns defeated the Kansas City Current 2-0 in the title game on Oct. 29 in Washington, D.C., and former Lions Sam Coffey and Rocky Rodriguez were a part of that victory. The two midfielders started the championship game, with Coffey playing all 90 minutes and Rodriguez 63 to help the Thorns claim their third league title. Rodriguez, who led Penn State to the NCAA championship as a senior in 2015, made 15 starts and totaled 3 goals for the Thorns this season. The last of those goals was the game-winner in a 2-1 vic- tory over the San Diego Wave in the NWSL semifinals. It was the first playoff goal of her seven-year pro career. Coffey, playing her first pro campaign, started 20 games and finished with 1 goal and 2 assists. She was a finalist for NWSL Rookie of the Year honors after a season in which she finished third on the team in minutes played (1,585). In early November, both Coffey and Rodriguez signed contract extensions with Portland through the 2025 season. — Matt Herb Penn State alumna Rocky Rodriguez scored the winning goal for the Portland Thorns in their victory over San Diego in the semifinal round of the NWSL playoffs.
