20 MARCH 2023 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED BY PATRICK ENGEL AND TYLER HORKA N otre Dame's roster movement has settled down after a busy December and early January. The Irish brought in five transfers. They lost five during the por- tal window, but only one (long snap- per Alex Peitsch) after the Gator Bowl Dec. 30. There will be more departures — Notre Dame is nine spots above the 85-scholarship limit — but those will apparently come later. With that heightened clarity, it's time to give an early depth chart projection. These are Blue & Gold Illustrated's best guesses as the roster stands now. Ev- eryone with 2023 eligibility who has not announced plans is included, even if it's someone who might not return. The class years listed are for the 2023 season. QUARTERBACK Starter: Sam Hartman (Gr.) Others: Tyler Buchner (Jr.), Steve Angeli (So.), Kenny Minchey (Fr.), Ron Powlus III (Jr.) Hartman is vastly experienced with five years of college ball under his belt. He's the all-time leader in touchdown passes thrown by an ACC quarterback with 110. Brady Quinn, Notre Dame's all-time leader in touchdown passes, threw 95 from 2003-06. Hartman can bring a downfield threat with his arm that Buchner isn't able to provide — or has not yet shown he's able to provide, at least. Buchner has only started three games at this level, 42 less than Hartman. But if Buchner cuts down on turnovers, he could give Hart- man a competitive push with what he showed on the positive side in the Gator Bowl with 5 total touchdowns. RUNNING BACK Starter: Logan Diggs (Jr.) Others: Audric Estime (Jr.), Chris Tyree (Sr.), Jadarian Price (So.), Gi'Bran Payne (So.), Jeremiyah Love (Fr.) Diggs and Estime will remain a strong one-two punch. Tyree was phased out Junior tight end Mitchell Evans is the early favorite to replace departed All-American Michael Mayer in the starting lineup.
