BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM MARCH 2023 87 IRISH IN THE PROS will become the first Fighting Irish sig- nal-caller to win the Lombardi Trophy since Steve Beuerlein did it as a backup to Troy Aikman with the Cowboys in 1992. One interesting Twitter post cel- ebrated Book's accomplishment with this: "Just as everyone predicted, the first QB from the 2021 NFL Draft class to make the Super Bowl is Ian Book." BLAKE WESLEY RETURNS After being sidelined for 10 weeks with a knee injury suffered Oct. 30, former Irish basketball guard Blake Wesley returned to the court with the San Antonio Spurs Jan. 13. Before the injury, Wesley — the first Irish first-round draft pick since Jer- ian Grant in 2015, and the first-ever one-and-done Irish player — enjoyed a quick career start. In his first two games before the injury, he scored 23 points and averaged 11.5 minutes per game. Upon his return from injury, Wesley was being eased back into the rotation. In eight games through Feb. 6, Wesley averaged 3.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in 11.5 minutes per game. Notre Dame's only other NBA rep- resentative, Milwaukee Bucks guard Pat Connaughton, has picked up where he left off after having the start to his season delayed a couple of weeks with a hamstring injury. Through Feb. 6 (37 games), Con- naughton averaged 8.7 points, 4.9 re- bounds and 1.2 assists per outing. Flipping between a reliable sub and a starter when needed, the former Irish captain scored double-figures in four out of six games between Jan. 17-29. Included in his solid stretch was a 19-point, 12-rebound game in a 107- 89 victory over Denver Jan. 25. It was Connaughton's second double-double this season after he scored 11 points with 11 rebounds in a 111-107 win over New York Jan. 9. In 16 January games, Connaughton recorded at least 10 points and 7 re- bounds seven times. ✦ Call 877-630-8768 to advertise!
