MAY 2023 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 13 ❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS Baseball freshman infielder and right-handed pitcher Mitch Voit commit- ted to the Wolverines in October 2019 and stayed loyal through the head- coaching change from Erik Bakich to Tracy Smith. The 6-foot, 190-pounder has pitched 19 innings with a 3.32 ERA and is batting .271 with 207 at-bats. Here are some things about Voit you may not have known: Best Aspect Of Being From Whitefish Bay, Wis.: "The community there is really great. Everyone is really nice. A lot of people who didn't have any- thing to do with the baseball team would come out and watch us during our season." Favorite Restaurant In Ann Arbor: "Mr. Spots. I go over there for their cheesesteaks." Best Meal He Can Cook By Himself: "I make some pretty good pasta." Favorite Professional Athlete: "Growing up, I was a huge [Milwaukee Brew- ers outfielder] Ryan Braun fan. I copied his batting stance. He's my favorite player by far." Sport He Enjoys Playing Besides Baseball: "I'm a hooper, street baller. I can't shoot, but I can drive to the rim like nobody's business. Can't catch me — I'm too quick." Favorite Television Show: "All time, I'd have to give it to 'The Office.'" Favorite Movie: "I'm a Marvel guy, and my favorite little series is 'Guard- ians of the Galaxy.'" Why He Chose Michigan: "I was probably 12 or 13 years old, and my dad asked me what school I wanted to go to. … I was like, 'Well, Michigan has the best mix of baseball and academics, so that's the school I want to be at.' I had my eyes on it ever since then, and it went perfectly, so it's a dream come true." What He Hopes To Do After Baseball: "I started out wanting to go the civil engineering route. … Now, I'm switching gears to econ. My dad got his Ph.D. in economics. I always liked the econ courses I took in high school, and so I think that's a pretty good fit for me. There are a lot of things I could do in my future." Favorite Memory At Michigan: "Obviously, everything on the field is great, making memories on the field. But really, all I can think about is spending time with the guys on the team. It's a new experience this year, getting to know a big group of guys, and all the time that we spend together is really fun." Overall Experience At Michigan: "It is a lot of time management. You work with your tutors … our academic coordinator, Ashley Korn, is amazing. She really helps me out. It's a balancing act. You have to spend so much time off the field with school, and you're putting in all this work in baseball. These past several months have been baseball and school and eat and sleep." — Clayton Sayfie Voit scored the game-winning run in a 3-1 victory over Penn State March 26.
