4 THE WOLVERINE ❱ MAY 2023 LOVE OUR RECRUITING CLASS, BUT … It's kind of wild we're seriously in it for only one (RB Taylor Tatum) top-50 player in the new On3 [class of 2024 football recruiting] rankings [released April 17]. Puts our success in a little bit of perspective. — Purple-blue It does, doesn't it. … That this coaching staff can develop players. That's what you meant, right? — Blue42Blood Our classes have had lower ranked recruits than this, and we have been very successful, I love where our class is right now. Just need WR, DL and CBs. — Berger4 The top kids will get NIL deals we won't match. I'm OK if we get our share of the top-300 kids with a couple top-100 sprinkled in. This won't change much until full pay-to-play is instituted. — CobraShika We have the 6th-ranked class ... I'll take that every single year. — krs919 I worry more about who our coaches want. Seems like we're getting all of our first and second options. Last cycle it wasn't like that at all. — JacksonBlue It's obviously a really good class. That's not my point. Our coaches have clearly figured out how to recruit kids they can develop who fit the program, with a lot of raw talent. It's simply kind of a bracing fact that our extremely good class will probably include no top-50 players. Those two facts can exist at the same time. I don't think it's an accident that the two best play- ers on offense the day we shredded Ohio State at home for the first time in 20 years were top-50 players. — Purple-blue Hassan Haskins and his three-star rating says hello. You know, the guy that shredded OSU the year before last? — Jmarr1123 If the past two years have proved anything, it's that this coaching staff might be the best in the business at developing the "not so highly rated" dudes into big-time players. You need your fair share of five-stars and top-100 guys in order to win big time, see J.J., The Don and Will J. as a few examples, but Michigan will continue to take the guys that fit their culture under Harbs. I would love a highly rated class with multiple five-stars, but I will say it again: I do not care. — lucasgoins I have not felt this good about recruiting in a long, long time. It reminds me of Bo's recruiting in the '80s. Where he took highly ranked kids but also mostly took players that fit a certain mold long term. Where those kids knew they had to develop and that made them wait their turn. Especially on the lines. A senior would graduate, and he would be replaced with a redshirt junior the next year that knew his responsibilities like the back of his hand. — wolvie217 WHERE WILL HUNTER DICKINSON LAND? What makes the most sense to me … Kansas. He is priority 1, 2 and 3 for them. He needs to maximize his earning potential now given he's not an NBA guy, and we all know that the Jayhawks' … well, "NIL game" is strong. They are "all in, and then some." A Kansas source we spoke to today believes it's a two-team race. — ChrisBalas I was initially thinking Georgetown. Then Mary- land. Today it's pretty clearly Kansas. But tomor- row? Let the bidding continue. Good luck to Hunter wherever he lands. — VinceBean Not sure he can really turn down Kansas if they are (or near) the highest bid for him. Plus, to the extent that regular-season college basketball mat- ters anymore, he'll be focal point of arguably the highest profile team in the country, playing in mar- quee Big 12 games every week for four months straight. — States on a Main So, Kansas — one of the premier programs with one of the elite coaches of all time — wants Hunter but some of our fans don't? This is classic love of the backup QB or backup goalie. Hunter was great all year and carried the team without much help. The problem is our young guys didn't know how to run the offense and pass the ball at the right time or move to get open. We still were 44th on KenPom because we had a pretty good team. That rating says we should have won more games based on our performance. Not that we under- performed, but that our performance deserved a better record. — rich_w May 2023 • Vol. 34, No. 11 ISSN 1048-9940 Editor John Borton TheWolverine.com Editor Chris Balas Football Recruiting Editor EJ Holland Staff Writers Clayton Sayfie, Anthony Broome Drew Hallett Managing Editor Mark Panus Contributing Editors Matt Herb Steve Downey Chris Riffer Layout And Design Jeanette Blankenship Chris Miller Contributing Photographers Lon Horwedel Per Kjeldsen Cover Photo Lon Horwedel Publisher Stu Coman Business Manager Linda Autry Circulation Manager Sarah Boone Advertising Sales Michelle DeLee-Hamilton 877-630-8768 Customer Service Cathy Jones, Laura Thornton, Crystal Clayton 800-421-7751 Business Intern Jackson Jones The Wolverine is published monthly.
