30 THE WOLVERINE ❱ MAY 2023 ❱ MICHIGAN FOOTBALL JIM HARBAUGH'S BOLD STATEMENT Following the spring game April 1, head coach Jim Harbaugh turned some heads when he said, "This is the best version of football that I've seen since I've been here the last eight years." Harbaugh doesn't say things he doesn't believe, and that quote is telling, especially since he typically avoids comparisons, or anything of the sort, like the plague. He mentioned "a great roster of players, tremen- dous coaches all pulling in the same direction," as well as the fact that there could be a "letdown as the months go on." But he likes what he's seen here in early April. Harbaugh knows as well as anyone that doesn't guarantee success. But Michigan is well positioned to make another run at the Big Ten championship and a national title. His players are intent on achieving the latter more than anything, and they aren't shy about it. Nebraska transfer linebacker Ernest Hausmann said it's talked about constantly, and that Harbaugh has laid out the goals in plain sight. It's hard to argue with the Michigan coach's bold proclamation. There's talent and depth at about ev- ery position, and this is likely the best coaching staff he's assembled, from both an on-field and recruiting standpoint. The culture is strong, too, and players such as senior All-America running back Blake Corum have been looking for reasons to stay rather than op- portunities to leave. Michigan has five Big Ten road games this fall, in- cluding at Nebraska and Penn State. Ohio State — also a projected top-five team — comes to town to end the regular season, and despite U-M winning two in a row against the Buckeyes, it doesn't mean that one will be a layup. Michigan still has to go out and prove it is what it says it is, but the Wolverines haven't had this kind of team to do that in a while. "This is not the time to regroup or to rest or to take a step back. Now's the time to attack," Harbaugh said. "The phrase 'strike while the iron is hot' is on the forefront of our minds. We want to keep the ground that we have, plus we want to take some more ground." — Clayton Sayfie OFFENSE Pos. No. Name Ht. Wt. Yr. QB 9 J.J.
