40 JUNE/JULY 2023 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED MEN'S BASKETBALL BY PATRICK ENGEL M icah Shrewsberry has made his first two staff hires as Notre Dame head coach. They're two names that have ties to him. Shrewsberry hired Virginia assistant Kyle Getter to be the Irish's associate head coach and former Penn State as- sistant Mike Farrelly to the same po- sition. The Irish are also expected to hire former Penn State director of re- cruiting Brian Snow and ex-Penn State video coordinator Grady Eifert to simi- lar roles, Blue & Gold Illustrated can confirm. Farrelly was on Shrewsberry's Penn State staff from 2021-23. A longtime mid-major assistant, he was named the acting head coach at Hofstra in 2020-21 before Shrewsberry first hired him. Getter, who worked at Virginia from 2018-23, is a Division III Hanover (Ind.) College alum who graduated from there two years after Shrewsberry did. "He's a rising star in this business with a proven track record for success at each of the stops along his coaching journey," Shrewsberry said in a statement. "Kyle has a relentless work ethic and incredible attention to detail. He's an integral piece of what we are trying to accomplish and build here at Notre Dame. Getter brings five years of top-level ACC experience to Notre Dame. Vir- ginia hired him as its director of recruit- ing/player development in 2018 and el- evated him to assistant coach in 2021. Getter has spent most of his ca- reer coaching in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Before going to the Cava- liers, he was as an assistant at Liberty from 2015-18 and an assistant at Rad- ford from 2011-15. He was the director of basketball operations at VCU from 2009-11 and had a prior one-year stint as a Liberty assistant from 2008-09. Getter was on Virginia's staff when the Cavaliers won the national title in 2019, and he was part of VCU's 2011 Fi- nal Four run as a No. 11 seed. The last time Getter coached outside Virginia was 2007-08, when he was an assistant at Division II Walsh Univer- sity in Ohio. He also was the director of basketball operations at Marshall from 2005-07, replacing Shrewsberry in that role. A native of Miamisburg, Ohio, he was a student assistant and an assistant at Hanover from 1999-2002. Shrews- berry's final year as a Hanover player was 1999, and he was a Division III as- sistant in Indiana from 1999-2003. Farrelly went 13-10 as Hofstra's act- ing head coach. He was an assistant for the Pride from 2013-20, working under head coach Joe Mihalich. He was on Mi- halich's staff at Niagara from 2011-13 and followed him to Hofstra. His first Division I assistant job was at Mount Saint Mary's in 2010-11. New Notre Dame associate head coach Kyle Getter was a member of Virginia's staff when the Cavaliers won the national title in 2019, and he also was part of VCU's 2011 Final Four run as a No. 11 seed.
