Mayer will have to bide his time and hone his craft to earn either of those Hall of Fame honors. But that isn't tem- pering any enthusiasm within Raider Nation as training camp rolls along. "[Mayer] has a skill set to come in and make an impact for us in Year 1," Raiders general manager Dave Ziegler said. Whether Mayer can enjoy the same success Casper did in the NFL remains to be seen. But the Raiders' old guard will certainly be rooting for him. "It's doing what they're asking me to do and not doing anything more," Mayer said of his rookie role. "It's about winning football games, and that's what they drafted me to do." OFF THE GRIDIRON In an effort to raise awareness and funds in the fight against cancer, former Irish All-American and current Indianapolis Colts All-Pro offensive lineman Quenton Nelson recently traded his shoulder pads for his ball glove while hosting the third annual Quenton Nelson Blocking Cancer event the weekend of July 21-23. The event works in conjunction with the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The weekend included a fundraising dinner July 21 and, for the first time, a celebrity softball game July 22 at Victory Field in downtown Indianapolis. The weekend's events — that featured appearances from local celebrities and Colts players — raised nearly $1 million. Set aside his strikeout at the plate in the softball game, Nelson was gracious and grateful for how the weekend played out. "Guys want to be here. Cancer af- fects everyone whether directly or in- directly," he said. "They could be any- where they want. They could be back in their hometowns.
