22 SEPT. 2, 2023 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED Items: Junior running back Audric Estimé scored the first touchdown of the college football season … Notre Dame converted all three of its third- down attempts, including an 11-yard run by Estimé on third-and-10. SECOND QUARTER NOTRE DAME 28, NAVY 0 Top Moment: Freshman wide re- ceiver Jaden Greathouse got open by a step up the seam. Hartman, who was hit as he threw, dropped a dime to Great- house's midsection inside the 5-yard line. Greathouse caught it and scored his first career touchdown. Fea t u re d Pe r fo r m e r : H a r t m a n was superb in the second quarter, completing 9 of 10 passes for 130 yards. In the first quarter, you said to yourself, 'Huh, Hartman looks pretty good.' In the second quarter, your jaw was on the floor. Stats: Time of possession was even more lopsided than before, with Notre Dame controlling the ball for 11:26. The Irish outgained the Midshipmen 143-69. Items: Graduate student defensive end Javontae Jean-Baptiste picked up his first 2 tackles and his first tackle for loss in a Notre Dame uniform … Senior receiver Chris Tyree caught his first 2 passes at his new position for 22 yards … Thomas caught Hartman's second touchdown on a post near the goal line. THIRD QUARTER NOTRE DAME 35, NAVY 0 Top Moment: Navy blitzed and Notre Dame didn't pick it up. Hartman side- stepped the extra rusher, who fell flat on his face trying to tackle him. Hart- man scrambled to his left and fired it to a wide-open Greathouse for the fresh- man's second touchdown of the day. Feature Performer: Estimé sat most of the second quarter after fumbling to start Notre Dame's second posses- sion, but the Irish let him go to work in the third. Estimé carried 5 times for 42 yards, and he made a juggling catch through contact for another 4. Stats: Notre Dame averaged 6.92 yards per play to Navy's 0.54. Navy failed to convert all four of its third-down at- tempts but converted a fourth down. Items: Sophomore vyper Joshua Burnham's third-quarter sack, aided by pressure from junior defensive tackle Gabriel Rubio was the first of his ca- reer and Notre Dame's first of the sea- son … Graduate student kicker Spencer Shrader's first field goal attempt, from 42 yards, missed wide right. FOURTH QUARTER NOTRE DAME 42, NAVY 3 Top Moment: Hartman threw a tun- nel screen to junior receiver Deion Col- zie from the Navy 25-yard line. Colzie turned up the field, got a block from sophomore tight end Holden Staes, broke a tackle and was gone. Feature Performer: Colzie. With the emergence of Greathouse and fellow freshman receiver Rico Flores Jr. with the second unit in practice, it looked like Colzie might get left behind. Not so. He hauled in 3 receptions for 45 yards, in- cluding an earlier contested catch. Stats: Navy won the time of pos- session battle 8:21 to 6:39. Notre Dame outgained Navy 64-62. Items: Notre Dame graduate student nose tackle Howard Cross III made 4 tackles … Navy avoided a shutout with a 31-yard Evan Warren field goal … Soph- omore quarterback Steve Angeli entered the game for Notre Dame's final posses- sion, completing the 1 pass to Flores for 2 yards. ✦ NOTRE DAME 42, NAVY 3 Aug. 26, 2023 ✦ Attendance: 49,000 Aviva Stadium ✦ Dublin, Ireland 1st 2nd 3rd 4th Final Navy 0 0 0 3 3 Notre Dame 14 14 7 7 42 NAVY ND FIRST QUARTER ND Estimé 1-yard run (Shrader kick) 8:26 0 7 Drive: 13 plays, 81 yards, 6:28 ND Price 19-yard run (Shrader kick) 1:03 0 14 Drive: 7 plays, 63 yards, 3:27 SECOND QUARTER ND Greathouse 35-yard pass from Hartman (Shrader kick) 10:00 0 21 Drive: 4 plays, 78 yards, 1:52 ND Thomas 14-yard pass from Hartman (Shrader kick) 0:13 0 28 Drive: 9 plays, 80 yards, 1:42 THIRD QUARTER ND Greathouse 20-yard pass from Hartman (Shrader kick) 9:36 0 35 Drive: 6 plays, 63 yards, 2:48 FOURTH QUARTER ND Colzie 25-yard pass from Hartman (Shrader kick) 11:54 0 42 Drive: 7 plays, 60 yards, 3:43 NAVY Warren 31-yard field goal 3:33 3 42 Drive: 15 plays, 62 yards, 8:21 NAVY ND Total First Downs 12 27 Rushing 11 13 Passing 1 13 Penalty 0 1 Rushing Attempts 48 32 Yards Gained Rushing 175 194 Yards Lost Rushing 49 3 Net Yards Rushing 126 191 Net Yards Passing 43 253 Passes Attempted 7 25 Passes Completed 3 20 Had Intercepted 0 0 Percent Completion 42.9% 80.0% Yards Per Attempt 6.1 10.1 Yards Per Completion 14.3 12.7 Total Offensive Plays 55 57 Total Net Yards 169 444 Average Gain Per Play 3.1 7.8 Fumbles: No.-Lost 3-0 2-0 Penalties: No.-Yards 3-26 1-10 Punts: No.-Yards 4-159 0-0 Average Per Punt 39.8 0.0 Average Net Punt 37.0 0.0 Punt Returns: No.-Yards 0-0 1-11 Kickoff Returns: No.-Yards 1-12 2-41 Interception Returns: No.-Yards 0-0 0-0 Fumble Returns: No.-Yards 0-0 0-0 Miscellaneous Yards 0 0 Possession Time 33:14 26:46 Third-Down Conversions 4-14 5-7 Percentage 28.6% 71.4% Fourth-Down Conversions 3-4 1-1 Percentage 75.0% 100.0% Sacks By: No.-Yards 0-0 2-19 Junior wide receiver Deion Colzie caught the second touchdown pass of his career versus Navy, hooking up with Hartman for a 25-yard score in the fourth quarter.
