X October 2023 9/11/23 159 3,430 3,430 100% 155 3,481 3,481 100% ON DREW ALLAR'S DEBUT AS PENN STATE'S STARTING QUARTERBACK … Drew played really well [against West Virginia], especially throwing while moving in the pocket. The key now is for him to work hard on getting better and better. This was the first game he has started, but it was impressive, as was the play of our receivers. Great job, Drew, but as our [2024] QB recruit Ethan [Grunkemeyer] says, work hard on getting 1 percent better each day. All players, especially quarterbacks, can improve with experience. — psykim Drew Allar IS that dude. There is no question about it. Penn State finally has a quarterback with poise, pocket presence and a strong arm who is accurate. Did you notice how Allar was able to successfully throw the ball away instead of taking a sack? I have not felt this excited about a Penn State quar- terback since Trace McSorley graduated. — GulfCoastLion He makes it look so easy. Upside is enormous. I wouldn't be surprised if he's the next Trevor Lawrence-type NFL pros- pect. — TomPSU823 This reminds me of watching Saquon Barkley as a young- ster here. You could tell right away what type of player he was capable of being. He went on to be a No. 2 pick in the first round as a running back. Drew needs to continue to improve and stay focused. He needs to not let hype like this get to his head ... but he has the ability and the tools to be Penn State's best quarterback of all time and a national championship-winning QB. — HJBPSU96 It's Week 1, folks. Slow down. — rap5088 ON WHETHER PSU SHOULD RESURRECT ITS EASTERN RIVALRIES … I sat through some great games with Pitt in the '70s and '80s, but the reality is that they have not been relevant in a generation or more. They want the series [resurrected] to try to become relevant, and their hope is that playing PSU could help them get some of those western PA kids. No thanks. I much prefer the Auburn series or even Temple. — Ceasar You lose to Pitt, you drop in rankings. You beat them, you don't get a bump. The game will never be played on Thanksgiving weekend again. I went to Penn State-Pitt games in the '70s and '80s and miss them, but not enough to want to do it again. — gslachta I fully recognize that I'm in the minority here, but I do not abide by the "it only helps Pitt and can only hurt Penn State" notion. … Penn State should handle Pitt 80 to 90 percent of years. Do that on a consistent basis and maybe that helps pull an extra one or two western PA kids a year who would otherwise go to Pitt. — notspyker I'm old enough to remember playing Pitt yearly, and I don't care if we ever play them again. Can't wait to play Oregon and Washington though. — Bayoulion 4 O C T O B E R 2 0 2 3 Allar threw for 325 yards and 3 touchdowns in Penn State's 38-15 victory over West Virginia on Sept. 2. He was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Nittany Lions' season opener. PHOTO BY STEVE MANUEL
