40 OCT. 7, 2023 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED GAME PREVIEW: LOUISVILLE non-triple option teams that were better were Washington, USC and Miami. Sam Hartman had the No. 7 quarterback rat- ing, 86.8, and the No. 3 passer rating, 200.89, in the country through Week 4. He became the first Notre Dame quarterback to ever have 14 or more touchdown passes without throwing an intercep- tion to begin a single season. USC's Caleb Williams was the only other quarterback in the top eight nationally in passer rating without an interception through Week 4. Though they didn't have a great day against Ohio State, the Notre Dame receivers were still viewed positively by SIS through Week 4. The Irish ranked No. 12 in the nation in points earned per play receiving per SIS. They'll get to go against a Lou- isville defense that ranked No. 114 in the country in points saved per play against the pass per SIS. The Cardinals gave up a plethora of passing yards in the first four games of the year; 313 to Georgia Tech, 299 to Indiana and 295 to Boston College to name a few totals. FCS Murray State only gained 72 yards through the air against Louisville, but that's irrelevant. Hartman and his wideouts should be able to get the job done through the air against the Cards. Hartman faced them four times while the starter at Wake Forest. He went 2-2 with an average of 235.8 passing yards per game with 8 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Surrounded by a better supporting cast at Notre Dame, he'll have a really good chance to push his all-time record versus Louisville to a winning one. Advantage: Notre Dame SPECIAL TEAMS Notre Dame unequivocally had one of the 10 best special teams units in college football in 2022. Some would even say it was top five. This year, not so much. Marty Biagi hadn't fully captured the spe- cial teams coordinator magic of Brian Mason, who is now with the Indianapolis Colts. Notre Dame ranked No. 15 in the country in the Fremeau Effi- ciency Index special teams rankings through Week 4. Louisville checked in at No. 79 at the same time. The Irish's number is likely dinged by graduate student kicker Spencer having made only 3 of 7 field goal attempts through five games. Four of OFFENSE Pos. No. Name Ht. Wt. Yr.
