BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM OCT. 28, 2023 15 85 Years Ago: Oct. 22, 1938 One of the more controversial moments in Notre Dame football annals occurred when head coach Elmer Layden's No. 5-ranked Fighting Irish improved to 4-0 with a 7-0 victory against No. 13 Carnegie Tech. During the fourth quarter of the scoreless contest, Carnegie Tech had a fourth-and-1 at its 46 when confused quarterback Paul Friedlander asked official John Getchell what down it was. An equally confused Getchell told him it was third down. Tech lost 2 yards on the play and was prepared to punt — when Getchell corrected his mistake and said it was actually fourth down and Notre Dame took pos- session, much to the vociferous protest of the Tartans, who had defeated the Irish the previous year. Notre Dame drove for the winning score off that possession, with Bud Kerr taking it in from 7 yards out with eight minutes remaining. 70 Years Ago: Oct. 24, 1953 In a meeting between titan coaches Frank Leahy and Bobby Dodd, the No. 1 Fighting Irish snapped No. 4 Georgia Tech's 31-game unbeaten streak with a 27-14 victory in Notre Dame Stadium. Overshadowing the win was four-time national champion Leahy collapsing at halftime in the Notre Dame locker room with an attack of pancreatitis. While the Irish prepared to take the field in the second half, university executive vice president Rev. Ned Joyce gave the 42-year-old and unconscious Leahy last rites of the Catholic Church. Leahy survived, but the episode would help precipitate his resignation later that season. With assistants Joe McArdle and Bill Earley taking over in the second half, Notre Dame broke a 7-7 tie in the third quarter on a 9-yard scoring catch by Joe Heap from Ralph Guglielmi and then Art Hunter pounced on a loose ball in the end zone from a high snap by Georgia Tech on a punt attempt. The scoring concluded in the fourth quarter when senior Johnny Lattner, on his 21st birthday, plunged over from the Tech 1-yard line after the student body sang "Happy Birthday." 50 Years Ago: Oct. 27, 1973 In the most famous run from scrimmage in Notre Dame Stadium history, Eric Penick's 85-yard touchdown gallop on the first Irish play in the second half provided a 20-7 cushion en route to a 23-14 conquest that snapped defending national champion USC's 23-game unbeaten streak. The victory elevated head coach Ara Parseghian's 6-0 Fighting Irish from No. 8 to No. 5 in the Associ- ated Press poll and marked the first victory over their archrival in seven years. Freshman safety Luther Bradley and junior linebacker Greg Collins headlined the defensive effort, forcing 4 turnovers and limiting Heisman Trophy candidate Anthony Davis to 55 yards on 19 carries. Kicker Bob Thomas converted all three of his field goal attempts for the Irish. 30 Years Ago: Oct. 23, 1993 For a record 11th consecutive year, No. 2-ranked Notre Dame defeated USC, 31-13, improving to 8-0 and setting up a Nov. 13 showdown with No. 1 Florida State. Junior tailback Lee Becton romped for a 70-yard touchdown on the game's second play and headlined a 305-yard rushing effort with 177 yards on 20 attempts. The Irish built a 28-7 halftime lead and coasted from there behind junior quarterback Paul Failla, who started in place of the injured Kevin McDougal. Failla completed 6 of 9 passes for 78 yards, with a 29-yard scoring pass to fullback Ray Zellars. UNDER THE DOME Joe Heap's 9-yard touchdown catch helped ignite a strong second half that led the No. 1 Irish to a 27-14 victory versus No. 4 Georgia Tech in 1953.
