18 JUNE/JULY 2024 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED pushing each other every day, day in and day out." The transfer portal window closed April 30, and as of that morning all four signal-callers were still on the team. So, it appears, the Irish will carry their strong quarterback room into the 2024 season. Leonard appears to be the present at Notre Dame, and there's a strong chance that Carr is the future. Angeli and Minchey will fight to change those narratives. Both quarterbacks, espe- cially the former, have embraced the competition. "We have a really strong room," An- geli said. "I'm excited for fall camp and throughout the summer." FIRST QUARTER BLUE 7, GOLD 0 Top moment: Amid pressure on a stunt from junior defensive tackle Don- ovan Hinish and great coverage from sophomore linebacker Drayk Bowen, Minchey's pass over the middle found its way into Talich's hands for a Blue team interception. Feature performer: Raridon had been limited with a minor injury all spring, but he made his presence felt early for the Blue team. He caught 3 passes on 4 targets for 31 yards in the first quarter, including a 21-yard touchdown. Stats: The Blue team outgained the Gold team 98-51. It also controlled time of possession 9:55-5:05. Items: Senior defensive tackle Jason Onye notched the first of two sacks by the Gold team against Angeli … Junior running back Gi'Bran Payne rushed 3 times for 22 yards for the Gold squad … Notre Dame kicker Mitch Jeter missed a 50-yard field goal short for the Blue team. SECOND QUARTER BLUE 14, GOLD 7 Top moment: Asked about the run- ning back room postgame, head coach Marcus Freeman led his answer with freshman running back Aneyas Wil- liams. He broke a tackle on his way to a 7-yard touchdown run, putting the Blue team up 14-0. Feature performer: Carr subbed in for Angeli on the Blue team and played very well, completing 7 of 10 throws for 66 yards. He turned heads with his first completion, an 18-yard dart to senior wideout Deion Colzie on an out-break- ing route, and he completed both his ensuing passes on the drive that ended in Williams' score. Stats: The Gold team posted a 47-28 advantage in rushing yards, but Blue squad had a 73-35 edge in passing yards. Items: Minchey ran 4 times for 25 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown, for the Gold team … Colzie reeled in 2 receptions for 32 yards … Graduate student defensive end RJ Oben strip- sacked Minchey to end the first half.
