40 ■ THE WOLFPACKER also face LSU in the Baha Mar Hoops Pink Flamingo Championship later in the fall. When the Wolfpack takes the court with a roster that includes four freshmen and four sophomores, the team will have to grow up quickly while dealing with the expectations built by last year's squad. "We're going to be counting on some young players that, right now, probably don't fully understand what it's like to get hit in the mouth at this level," Moore said. "Hopefully, we can stay hungry and stay humble and keep getting better and keep climbing and try to get back to that level." Backcourt Rivers and James are back for their sec- ond full season in the Wolfpack's start- ing lineup. They both received first-team All-ACC recognition after establishing themselves as the faces of the program. The Associated Press also named Riv- ers an honorable mention All-Ameri- can after the 6-foot-1 guard put up 12.5 points and 6.1 rebounds per game as a ju- nior. She shared the point guard minutes with Brooks, who came off the bench as a freshman to average 9 points and 3.4 assists per game. This year, Moore wants to see Brooks improve her three-point shot, which she knocked down at a high clip at the prep level. There still are plenty of ways in which the ACC All-Freshman guard can improve. "I think there's still a lot of ceiling that Zoe can strive for and get better," Moore said. James paced the team in scoring at 16.8 points per game, putting up at least 19 points in each of the team's NCAA Tour- nament contests. She averaged career highs in nearly every statistical category last year, including points, rebounds (4.6), assists (2.9) and three-point per- centage (34.2). To round out the core group of four, Hayes provides consistent defense and three-point shooting from the wing. She also finished second on the team in re- bounding, averaging 6.8 boards per game. Moore said he was pleased that NC State was able to retain its backcourt at a time when player movement is com- monplace. "Nowadays, with the transfer portal and NIL and all this stuff out there, some- times it's hard to hold the team together," 2024-25 Women's Basketball Schedule Date Opponent Location Time TV Oct. 29 Anderson (S.C.)
