❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS NOVEMBER 2024 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 15 FIVE YEARS AGO, 2019: Michigan obliterated Michigan State in a football showdown at The Big House, 44-10, on Nov. 16, 2019. Quarterback Shea Patterson gutted the MSU defense with 384 passing yards and 4 touchdowns through the air. The Spartans actually got off to a 7-0 lead in the game, scoring on a 1-yard Brian Lewerke pass with 1:48 remaining in the opening quarter. Michigan responded with an all-out offensive assault, scoring 44 of the final 47 points put on the board. U-M tied the score on a 1-yard Hassan Haskins run, then took a 17-7 lead to the halftime locker room. Patterson connected with Nick Eubanks on a 5-yard TD pass, and placekicker Quinn Nordin added a 28-yard field goal to put Michigan in command at intermission. Patterson fired touchdown passes of 18, 22 and 39 yards in the second half to send the Spartans home empty-handed. Afterward, the Wolverines celebrated a win that lifted them to 8-2, while Michigan State slid to 4-6. "This one is special," Patterson said. "I'm proud to be part of this team and part of a dominating win like that." 10 YEARS AGO, 2014: Brady Hoke's Wolverines pulled out a desperately needed victory at Northwestern, holding off the Wildcats, 10-9, on Nov. 8, 2014. The win al- lowed Michigan to claw back to a 5-5 record, while Northwestern slipped to 3-6. U-M tailback De'Veon Smith carried 18 times for 121 yards and the Wolverines' only touchdown in the contest. Neither team scored in the opening 30 minutes, then Smith broke the deadlock with a 3-yard touchdown run at the 6:49 mark of the third quarter. Northwestern placekicker Jack Mitchell answered with a 21-yard field goal midway through the fourth quarter, making it 7-3. Michigan's Matt Wile offset that with a 37-yard field goal with 3:10 remaining, restoring U-M's one-touchdown lead at 10-3. With time running out, Northwestern drove 74 yards in 14 plays, scoring on a 3-yard touchdown pass from Trevor Siemian to Tony Jones. With the score 10-9, the Wildcats opted to go for the win, but Siemian's attempt at a two-point conversion throw never left his hand, allowing the Wolverines to escape with a victory. "We didn't score a lot of points, so I felt like I'd take a one-play opportunity — three yards, one play," explained Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald. Michigan defensive end Frank Clark blew up those plans, racing in to pressure Si- emian, who slipped to the turf trying to escape. 25 YEARS AGO, 1999: A Tom Brady-led Michigan crew took down Ohio State in The Game, 24-17, on Nov. 20, 1999. Brady's 10-yard touchdown pass to wideout Marquise Walker with 5:01 remaining in the game provided the winning margin over the Buckeyes. Brady threw for 150 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while tailback Anthony Thomas rushed for 119 yards and Michigan's other touchdown. U-M's defense limited OSU quarterback Steve Bellisari to 105 yards passing and picked him off twice, while the Buckeyes did pile up 263 yards on the ground. A 6-yard touchdown pass from Bellisari to Kevin Houser staked OSU to a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter. Thomas tied the score on a 1-yard TD run in the second quarter, but Bellisari's 1-yard touchdown pass to Jamar Martin gave the visitors a 14-7 lead at the half. Hayden Epstein and Dan Stultz traded third-quarter field goals, before Michigan tied the score on Brady's 8-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Thompson with 37 seconds remaining in the third. Brady's game-winner to Walker represented the only points scored in the final pe- riod, Michigan's defense holding off the Buckeyes. Cato June's fumble recovery set up the score, in a game in which OSU outgained the Wolverines, 368-252. "We wanted a big game," linebacker Ian Gold said. "That's exactly what happened. We knew coming in that Ohio State would be like a caged animal." — John Borton THIS MONTH IN MICHIGAN ATHLETICS HISTORY FOOTBALL SEASON NEWSLETTERS Exclusively For Wolverine Magazine Subscribers BE SURE TO GET YOUR EMAIL ON OUR LIST!* The Wolverine Now digital newsletter is emailed every Thursday and Sunday of game weeks during football season.
