C O M against the Trojans, which Allar called "insane" even though the quarterback hadn't seen the box score before stepping into the media room following the game. "I'm just super happy for him," Allar said. "He's shown he's the best tight end in the country. I didn't realize that he had 17 catches, but it just shows the player he is — super special player, super special teammate." Warren does it all for Penn State … ex- cept toot his own horn. That job has fallen to his teammates and coaches, and they are happy to oblige. Franklin has repeat- edly hailed Warren as one of the nation's best players, and he did so again in the wake of his huge game against USC. "I've been talking about him being the best tight end in college football," Franklin said, "but the reality is, he's now part of a conversation as one of the best players in all of college football." Warren has put himself in strong con- tention for the Mackey Award, which goes to the nation's top tight end. Could any other trophies be within reach? The Max- well Award goes to the nation's best all- around player, and Warren certainly em- bodies that ideal. As for college football's ultimate individual honor, the Heisman Trophy, only two tight ends have ever won it, the most recent being Notre Dame's Leon Hart in 1949. So, that's not a likely scenario, no matter how the rest of the season goes. Warren isn't concerned with accolades or media buzz. He cares about winning. If that means that the ball finds some of his fellow pass catchers more frequently in the second half of the season, that would be fine with him. Following the USC game, he was just as excited about se- nior receiver Julian Fleming's two fourth- down conversions on Penn State's tying drive late in the fourth quarter as he was about his own performance. "I was so happy with the way the of- fense responded," Warren said. "Julian Fleming had a drop earlier, and then on that last drive to tie it up, he had two great catches to keep the drive alive. I was re- ally, really proud. The running backs and receivers stepped up when they needed to. … I thought we just did an all-around good job." ■ Penn State's Single-Game Receiving Record Falls At USC Penn State was still struggling to overcome the NCAA's sanctions when it welcomed Ohio State to Beaver Stadium on Oct. 25, 2014. The Nittany Lions had dropped two of their first three Big Ten games and were ex- pected to have their hands full against the 13th-ranked Buckeyes. Sure enough, Ohio State left State College with a 31-24 win. But Urban Meyer's team needed double over- time to do so, and throughout the game, the Nittany Lions showed signs of the potential that would lead them back to the top of the conference in a couple of years. One of those signs was a standout performance by receiver DaeSean Hamilton. The former three-star prospect from Fredericksburg, Va., had redshirted as a true freshman due to a wrist injury, but he made an immediate impact the following year. That included a busy night against the Buckeyes in which he caught 14 passes for 126 yards. Hamilton would go on to become Penn State's career leader with 214 catches, and until recently he held the school's single-game receptions mark with his performance against Ohio State. Senior tight end Tyler Warren ended his reign atop that list by catching 17 passes for 224 yards in Penn State's 33-30 overtime win over USC on Oct. 12. Hamilton acknowledged the accom- plishment later that night via social media. "Shoutout Tyler Warren," he tweeted. — Matt Herb Most Single-Game Receptions By A PSU Player Name Rec.
