Washington State thought it did during its game against the Broncos Sept. 28. The Cougars had a clean shot at Jeanty at the line of scrimmage, on a carry that started at the Boise State 36-yard line. They missed. Three yards downfield, another sec- ond-level defender tried to hit him without wrap- ping up. That had no chance. Two more could have brought him down three yards later, but Jeanty kept bouncing off would-be tacklers until he somehow broke into the open field. Jeanty took that carry 64 yards to the end zone, almost all of which came after contact. After a 209- yard effort in the Mountain West Championship Game, he is fourth on the all-time single-season rushing list with 2,497 yards, behind only Central Florida's Kevin Smith (2,567 in 2007), Wisconsin's Melvin Gordon (2,587 in 2014) and Oklahoma State's Barry Sanders (2,628 in 1988). Incredibly, Jeanty's 1,882 yards after contact would lead the country in total rushing yards. He is averaging 7.3 yards per carry, and in most second halves his services were no longer required. Jeanty was the biggest reason Boise State pushed Oregon to the brink. He carried 25 times for 192 yards and 3 touchdowns, and the Ducks had to rely on a last-second field goal to win. The Broncos lost that game, but they made one thing clear: They owned the driver's seat for the Group of Five's spot in the CFP. Boise State never let go of the wheel, and after the Big 12 spent most of the season eating itself alive, the Broncos earned a first-round bye. Boise State is not just Jeanty, although there's a reason he could be the first running back to win the Heisman Trophy since Derrick Henry in 2015. Red- shirt sophomore quarterback Maddux Madsen has been efficient and protected the football, throwing for 22 touchdowns and just 3 interceptions. But with a good-not-great defense that gave up 45 points to Georgia Southern and 30 to Utah State, the Broncos will go as far as Jeanty can take them in December and January. — Jack Soble NO. 3 Boise State 2024 STAT LEADERS Rushing: RB Ashton Jeanty (2,497 yards, 29 TD) Passing: QB Maddux Madsen (2,714 yards, 22 TD, 3 INT) Receiving: WR Cameron Camper (55 catches, 837 yards, 4 TD) Tackles: S Ty Benefield (73) Sacks: DE Jayden Virgin-Morgan (10) Interceptions: Benefield (2) 2024 SCHEDULE Date Opponent (TV) Result/Time (ET) Aug. 31 at Georgia Southern W, 56-45 Sept. 7 at Oregon L, 37-34 Sept. 21 Portland State W, 56-14 Sept. 28 Washington State W, 45-24 Oct. 5 Utah State W, 62-30 Oct. 12 at Hawai'i W, 28-7 Oct. 25 at UNLV W, 29-24 Nov. 1 San Diego State W, 56-24 Nov. 9 Nevada W, 28-21 Nov. 16 at San Jose State W, 42-21 Nov. 23 at Wyoming W, 17-13 Nov. 29 Oregon State W, 34-18 Dec. 6 UNLV* W, 21-7 Dec. 31 vs. Penn State/SMU^ (ESPN) 7:30 p.m. * Mountain West Championship ^ College Football Playoff quarterfinal in the Fiesta Bowl at Glendale, Ariz.
