Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham, who came from Oregon after spending one season as Dan Lanning's offensive coordinator, went 3-9 in Year 1. In his second season, 2024, Dillingham led the Sun Devils to a 10-2 regular season. With victory No. 11 in the Big 12 title game against Iowa State (45-19), ASU clinched its first 11-win season since 1996. The Sun Devils were picked last in the Big 12 in their first year in the conference, and they won it. They did so with- out their No. 1 wide receiver, Jordyn Tyson, and they'll have to keep winning without him in the CFP. Tyson, who led ASU with 1,101 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns, underwent surgery for an upper-body injury and is out for the season. Tyson was the favorite tar- get of redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt, who threw for 8.8 yards per attempt, 24 touch- downs and 5 interceptions in his first year with Arizona State after transferring from Michigan State. Without Tyson, he and the Sun Devils will have to lean heavily into their best player: senior running back Cam Skattebo. "He's put in the work," Dillingham said about Skat- tebo. "When he showed up here, he was unbeliev- able [at] contact balance, hard to tackle. But this year, he really took another step." Skattebo is an unlikely Heisman dark horse, but according to On3, that's what he is. A panel of four On3 national experts has the second-year transfer from Sacramento State at No. 5 in the Heisman race. Throughout 13 games, Skat- tebo totaled 1,568 yards on the ground and 506 yards through the air, along with 22 total touchdowns. The 5-foot- 11, 215-pound back is also Ar- izona State's leading receiver, now that Tyson is on the shelf. "He really pushed himself to be the strongest version of himself, to drop body fat, to increase speed," Dillingham said. "He really took his game to a level that I felt like he could get to." If the CFP is anything like March Madness, unlikely stars will become household names. Skattebo has the Sun Devils gearing up for a Cinderella run. — Jack Soble NO. 4 Arizona State Sun Devils Quarterfinal Opponent: vs. No. 5 Texas or No. 12 Clemson Jan. 1 in the Chick-fil- A Peach Bowl at Atlanta 2024 Record: 11-2, 7-2 Big 12 Head coach: Kenny Dillingham (14-11, second season at ASU and overall) Soonest the Irish could see them: Col- lege Football Playoff National Champi- onship Jan. 20 in Atlanta All-time series vs. Notre Dame: Irish lead 3-1 Last meeting vs. Notre Dame: Sun Dev- ils 55, Irish 31 (Nov. 8, 2014, at Tempe, Ariz.) 2024 STAT LEADERS Rushing: RB Cam Skattebo (1,568 yards, 19 TD) Passing: QB Sam Leavitt (2,663 yards, 24 TD, 5 INT) Receiving: WR Jordyn Tyson (75 catches, 1,101 yards, 10 TD) Tackles: S Myles Rowser (93) Sacks: DL Elijah O'Neil and DL Clayton Smith (4) Interceptions: DB Keith Abney II (3) 2024 SCHEDULE Date Opponent (TV) Result/Time (ET) Aug. 31 Wyoming W, 48-7 Sept. 7 Mississippi State W, 30-23 Sept. 12 at Texas State W, 31-28 Sept. 21 at Texas Tech L, 30-22 Oct. 5 Kansas W, 35-31 Oct. 11 Utah W, 27-19 Oct. 19 at Cincinnati L, 24-14 Nov. 2 at Oklahoma State W, 42-21 Nov. 9 UCF W, 35-31 Nov. 16 at Kansas State W, 24-14 Nov. 23 BYU W, 28-23 Nov. 30 at Arizona W, 49-7 Dec. 7 vs. Iowa State* W, 45-19 Jan. 1 vs. Texas/Clemson^ (ESPN) 1 p.m. * Big 12 Championship at Arlington, Texas ^ College Football Playoff quarterfinal in Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl at Atlanta
