Florida State canceled its spring game because its stadium is under construction. NC State canceled its spring game be- cause it hired three new coordinators in the offseason and had no interest in pro- viding opponents with a sneak preview of the changes they have in store. Texas canceled its spring game because coach Steve Sarkisian felt his players needed a reprieve after playing 30 games over the past two campaigns. Nebraska canceled its spring game be- cause it didn't want to showcase its young talent at a moment in college sports when tampering is on the rise. Any or all of those rationales would have worked for the Nittany Lions. Bea- ver Stadium is a construction site, new coordinator Jim Knowles is revamping the defense, PSU is coming off the lon- gest season in program history, and every school in the country has to guard against the possibility of losing talented young players to schools with more money or playing time to offer. The price of the transfer portal is eternal vigilance.
