FOOTBALL RECRUITING ROUNDUP RECRUITING NOTES • Notre Dame has not completely surrendered in its pursuit of Harrisburg (Pa.) High four-star running back Messiah Mickens. Despite Mickens — a longtime Penn State verbal commitment — announcing that he had shut down his recruitment March 29, Irish running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider visited the 2026 class recruit at his home May 3. Mickens is ranked by On3 as the No. 4 player in Pennsylvania and the No. 9 running back nationally in the 2026 cycle. He committed to the Nittany Lions on Aug. 19, 2023, before his sophomore season, when Seider was Penn State's running backs coach. After Seider transitioned to Notre Dame in February, Mickens initially planned to visit South Bend this spring, followed by an official visit in June. However, he canceled all upcoming trips to other schools after a pivotal visit to Happy Valley at the end of March. "I committed to that school for a reason, and I never wanted to be that kid who committed to three different schools," Mickens told Blue White Illustrated March 30. "I committed to that school for the tradition. Being a kid in this state, it does mean a lot to me to play for my hometown school." But Seider is not giving up. His trip back to the Keystone State occurred during the NCAA recruiting contact period, when college assistant coaches could visit 2026 recruits at their high schools or homes. Now, it will be up to Notre Dame to see if it can persuade Mickens to reconsider and make a return visit to South Bend. • Another key stop for the Irish in Pennsylvania was in the Philadelphia area, where they visited top defensive back target Joey O'Brien of Wyndmoor (Pa.) La Salle College. On April 28, the first day the Notre Dame coaching staff hit the road during the spring contact period, defensive backs coach Mike Mickens and defensive analyst Jevaughn Codlin traveled to see O'Brien. The 2026 prospect is listed by On3 as the No. 2 recruit in Pennsylvania, and the No. 8 safety and No. 100 overall player in the country. "Everything we talked about was real," O'Brien told Blue & Gold Illustrated about his interactions with Mickens and Codlin. "I've got a real relationship with them." Standing 6-foot-4 and weighing 180 pounds, O'Brien has narrowed his choices to Notre Dame, Clemson, Michigan, Oregon, Penn State and Tennes- see. He is scheduled to return to South Bend for an official visit on June 20, marking his fifth trip to see the Irish. • Notre Dame commit Ben Nichols will have the chance to showcase his talents against high school football's top players this December. Following his performance at the Under Armour Ohio Camp April 27, Nichols — a four-star offensive lineman from Davison (Mich.) High — earned an invita- tion to participate in the 2025 Under Armour All-America Game in Orlando, Fla. Nichols is currently the only Irish commit set to play in the game.
