JUNE/JULY 2025 ❱ THE WOLVERINE 11 ❱ INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS WR Tyler Morris Could Have Broken Out By Chris Balas When the receiving class of Amorion Walker, Darrius Clemons and Tyler Morris first arrived on campus in 2022, former head coach Jim Harbaugh couldn't help but be impressed. He called them the "freak show" given their incredible athleticism, and many predicted big things for the trio. Instead, Walker barely saw action before moving to cornerback and transferring out (twice, now at Middle Tennessee State), and Clemons moved on to Oregon State last season. And Morris? He made one of the biggest plays in recent Michigan history with a 38-yard touchdown catch in which he outran Alabama defenders in the 2024 Rose Bowl to help lead the Wolverines to a win in the CFP semifinal. We expected that might be his coming out party, and Michigan coaches thought so last spring, too. Instead, he was hindered by poor quarterback play and never really got the opportunity to show what he could do in a No. 1 role. He caught only 23 passes for 248 yards and 2 touchdowns, a year after hauling in 13 for 197. Morris instead transferred to Indiana this past offseason, where he subse- quently suffered a serious knee injury in an April spring practice that required season-ending surgery. The Wolverines, meanwhile, are still searching for a No. 2 behind proposed No. 1 Donaven McCulley … ironically, a transfer from the Hoosiers. That leaves both Morris and Michigan faithful to wonder "what might have been" had he decided to stick around. OL Andrew Gentry Was A Big Loss By Clayton Sayfie It took Andrew Gentry some time to get back into football shape, after a two-year mission that followed his high school career. But he started to make an impact as a 23-year-old junior (redshirt sophomore eligibility-wise) in 2024. While Gentry didn't win the starting right tackle spot out of fall camp, he earned it in the middle of the sea- son and "played well" in his first career start — a tilt at Illinois — according to head coach Sherrone Moore. In 115 offensive snaps for the year, Gentry graded out 72.1 overall via Pro Football Focus, allowing no pres- sures and posting an 82.1 rating in pass protection. Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending foot injury against Michigan State in his second start. Gentry left for BYU in December, and now Michigan is searching for answers at tackle, especially on the left side. He would've factored into battles on either side of the line. The 6-foot-7, 327-pounder still has two seasons of eligibility remaining, meaning he could've been a big part of the future of the Wolverines' offensive line. Wide receiver Tyler Morris (Indiana) may have been the most productive player who transferred away from Michigan this offseason, but he was given ample opportunity. Morris registered the most non-offensive line or quarter- backs snaps on the offense in 2024, yet he still only hauled in 23 catches for 248 yards and 2 touchdowns. Running back Benjamin Hall (North Carolina) was also a candidate, but he was continually passed up on the depth chart throughout his time in Ann Arbor. ❱ POINT ❙ COUNTERPOINT ❰ WHICH TRANSFER PORTAL DEPARTURE STINGS THE MOST?
