BLUEGOLDONLINE.COM NOV. 29, 2025 51 biggest game to that point, against DePaul University of Chicago, led by player-coach Walter Clinnen, an- other former Notre Dame player. In the 1910 Notre Dame season opener against Olivet, Clinnen had replaced starting fullback Rockne, who was benched the rest of the varsity sea- son before resurfacing at end in 1911. After two seasons at Notre Dame, Clinnen played another two years at DePaul, also serving as head coach of the Blue Demons. He brought just 12 men to St. Louis to meet CBC on Nov. 1, and ac- cording to news reports, DePaul immedi- ately "forgot all the rules that were written about the game and resorted to the rough- est kind of playing … they began to smash, kick and use vile language to the officials." When a DePaul player was ejected for kneeing a CBC opponent in the stom- ach, Clinnen "positively refused to have his man put out of the game." With CBC leading 39-7 in the second half, another disqualification brought out Clinnen's ire, and the game was declared a forfeit victory for Christian Brothers. In its Nov. 22 battle with Notre Dame, CBC took a 7-0 first-half lead as Harper rested several of his regulars to save their energy for the Texas game five days later. But when Dorais and big fullback Ray Eichenlaub entered the fray, the Irish took over. "With the heady Do- rais and the heavy Eichenlaub back in the game, the whole aspect of the game changed," reported the Scholastic. Dorais scored 2 touchdowns, one on a 40-yard run, and Eichenlaub plunged for the other to secure a 20-7 triumph and keep Notre Dame undefeated. It was on to Austin, where they trained at fel- low Holy Cross institution St. Ed- ward's College before stomping the Longhorns, 30-7, to complete the college careers of Dorais, Rockne and several mates. A l s o o n T h a n k s g iv i n g Day, Christian Brothers lost a return battle with Haskell, 39-10, before a big crowd of 6,000 in Kansas City. Life for CBC would change dra- matically on Oct. 5, 1916, when a massive fire destroyed the school, killing seven firemen, two elderly Chris- tian Brothers and a nurse. The school found a temporary home in a building loaned by nearby Washington University. When it rebuilt, the college division was put in abeyance and ultimately closed. The high school, meanwhile, has only prospered over the past century-plus, producing outstanding young men … like Jeremiyah Love. ✦ Jim Lefebvre is an award-winning Notre Dame author and leads the Knute Rockne Memorial Society.
