TEAM MARY EDNA WILLIAMS Helping Wolfpackers Move For Over 27 Years unexpected journey to ACC football. He broke his ankle three games into his senior season at Burlington (N.C.) Williams High, and the best he was hearing from recruiters were from the Division II and III ranks, and those were potential partial scholarships. If anything, Hall thought maybe he could get a track scholarship. He had tied the school record in the 400-meter dash and was part of some of the better relay teams in the state, including a 4x200 squad that would have won the state title had it not been for a disputed lane violation. "They need instant replay for track," Hall said years later. The main reason Hall ended up at NC State was academics. He had to be convinced by his running backs coach at Williams, Lamont Moore, to try out for football. "He said, 'Work your butt off, try to earn a home. If it doesn't work out, at least you know you tried,'" Hall noted. "I walked on and I've been grinding ever since." — Matt Carter Miscellaneous Notes • Fifth-year senior Ryan Cheek was not the only linebacker to move to fullback during August. Freshman Quinton Patterson, who was the defensive MVP for the state of North Carolina's team in the Shrine Bowl last December, is also lining up at fullback after starting camp at linebacker. • The defensive tackle position took a hit on the depth chart with the loss of two players. Head coach Dave Doeren announced that freshman Kenton Gibbs was lost for the year with an Achilles tendon injury, and redshirt freshman K'Hadree Hooker left the team near the end of preseason camp. • There were a couple of number changes during fall camp. Freshman receiver Jonathan Alston switched from No. 3 to No. 15, and junior long snapper Scott Thompson is now wearing No. 97 after sporting No. 57 during his first two years at NC State. ■ Mary Edna Williams Class of 1978 Broker RE/MAX Preferred Associates Office: 919-256-4201 Cell: 919-880-0071 1520 Glenwood Avenue, Raleigh maryednaw@remax.net www.maryednawilliams.com Each office independently owned and operated Redshirt freshman defensive tackle K'Hadree Hooker left the team near the end of preseason camp. photo by ken martin 56 ■ the wolfpacker 50-56.Wolfpack Football.indd 56 8/23/13 3:24 PM
