Under the Dome Anniversaries In Notre Dame Athletics History: Aug. 29-Sept.2 20 Years Ago: Sept. 1, 1988 Entering the month, the buzz of August camp in head coach Lou Holtz's third season is that eight of the 21 incoming freshmen were clocked at 4.48 or less in the 40-yard dash. At the top of the list was wideout/return man Raghib "Rocket" Ismail with a 4.28. Unfortunately, Notre Dame is deemed "a year away" from top-10 contention because the offense is in complete flux with the graduation of Heisman Trophy winner Tim Brown, questions at quarterback with 40-percent passer Tony Rice and the loss of four fifth-year senior starters from the offensive line. These people have [the baton], they run for a while and then they pass it on to other people." 20 Years Ago: Aug. 31, 1993 Four days prior to No. 7 Notre Dame's opener at home against Northwestern, head coach Lou Holtz is in the eye of the storm when Under The Tarnished Dome: How Notre Dame Sold Its Soul For Football Glory is published. Co-authored by Doug Looney and Don Yaeger, the book is replete with accusations of illegal payments to players during Holtz's tenure at Minnesota, harsh treatment of players — both physical and verbal — insistence that players participate with injuries, steroid use, lower academic standards and so on. Six times Holtz is asked about the book, with three of the inquiries posed by ABC Nightline's Armen Be a part of Notre Dame's climb back to the top of college football!
