Under the Dome Charting The Irish Notre Dame On Television It's no secret Notre Dame fans rarely have to struggle to find the Irish on their television each Saturday. Whereas other fans might scramble to find the Big Ten Network, ESPNU or regional broadcasters such as the SEC Network, Notre Dame rarely ventures away from a major network or ESPN. Here's just how rare it is for the Irish to appear on any other channel in the 15 seasons leading up to the 2013 campaign. With NBC owning the rights to each Notre Dame home football contest, the Irish appeared on "The Peacock Network" 101 times from 1998-2012, including trips to the Gator Bowl following the 1998 and 2002 regular seasons. ABC is the clear runner-up in Irish TV broadcasts (49), followed by ESPN (18), CBS (14), ESPN2 (1), FOX (1) and CBS College Sports Network (1). The outliers are FOX and CBS College Sports Network (formerly known as CSTV), but each will broadcast a Notre Dame game in 2013 (Stanford Notre Dame Television and Air Force, respectively) as they did during Appearances From 1998-2012 the 2006 season. Of the remaining 10 contests in NetworkNumber of Appearances 2013, NBC will televise seven and ESPN one, with NBC101 two yet to be decided between ABC and ESPN. ABC49 Not surprisingly, ABC, not ESPN, has broadESPN18 cast nearly every road game during successful CBS14 seasons. Although television is now trending ESPN21 toward placing more premium content on cable, FOX1 that was not the case in the past. ABC televised CSTV1 19 games during the 2000, 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2012 seasons, compared to just three on ESPN (including the BCS National Championship Game last January). SI.com Projects Notre Dame as 'Top Flop' Of 2013 The difference between Sports Illustrated the magazine and SI.com the website was made clear this August. In its preseason edition, SI the magazine picked Notre Dame as the No. 8 college football team in the country — the highest we've seen any outlet have the Fighting Irish since the announcement near the end of May that 2012 starting quarterback Everett Golson would not be enrolled at Notre Dame this fall because of an academic suspension. However, a few weeks later this August on SI.com, five of its seven college football writers had Notre Dame as the "flop team" of 2013. The other two had Florida and Michigan. The reasons were basically three-fold.
