irish in the pros NFL Notes • Quarterback Brady Quinn was released by the Seattle Seahawks Aug. 31 when NFL rosters were trimmed to 53 players. He then signed with the New York Jets and is currently listed third on the team's depth chart. • Jonas Gray was released by the Miami Dolphins Aug. 31, but signed with the Baltimore Ravens Sept. 2 and is currently on the team's practice squad. • The Carolina Panthers released quarterback Jimmy Clausen on the final day of roster cuts Aug. 31, and he remained a free agent heading into the first weekend of the season. • Other former Irish players released include: linebacker Brian Smith by the Buffalo Bills Aug. 22; wide receiver Robby Toma by the Arizona Cardinals Aug. 22; safety Tom Zbikowski by the Chicago Bears Aug. 25; quarterback Dayne Crist by the Baltimore Ravens Aug. 30, after signing to play on its practice squad Aug. 25; and offensive lineman Mike Golic Jr. by the Pittsburgh Steelers Aug. 31. MLB Player Update Through Sept. 5 • John Axford (Played at Notre Dame from 200205), RHP, St. Louis Cardinals: Traded from the Milwaukee Brewers to the Cardinals Aug. 30 … Stood 6-7 with no saves and a 4.40 ERA in 65 total relief appearances … Had 54 strikeouts in 571⁄3 innings, but also permitted 87 base runners (63 hits and 24 walks) … Has struggled since the All-Star break, compiling a 5.79 ERA in 182⁄3 innings and allowing four home runs. • Jeff Manship (2004-06), RHP, Colorado Rockies: Has made four starts and six appearances with the Rockies, posting a 0-5 record with a 6.94 ERA … Opened the season with the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox and was 6-8 with a 4.85 ERA in 24 appearances (17 starts). • David Phelps (2005-08), RHP, New York Yankees: Was 6-5 with a 5.01 ERA in 18 appearances, 12 of which were starts, before getting placed on the disabled list since July 6 with a right forearm strain … Collected 75 strikeouts and walked 32 batters in 822⁄3 innings prior to being sidelined. • A.J. Pollock (2007-09), OF, Arizona Diamondbacks: Started 82 games in center field for Arizona prior to the All-Star break and has played in 118 games … Was batting.255 with seven home runs and 33 RBI …Also has 10 stolen bases in 13 attempts and an on-base percentage of .301 … Has made just one error in 215 attempts in the field. • Jeff Samardzija (2004-06), RHP, Chicago Cubs: Sported an 8-11 record with a 4.29 ERA in 29 starts as the Cubs' No. 1 hurler … Notched 190 strikeouts while allowing 184 hits in his first 189 innings of work. NBA Player Update Through Sept. 5 • Tim Abromaitis (Played at Notre Dame from 2007-12), G, Boston Celtics: Played for Boston during the NBA's Orlando Summer League … Averaged 7.2 points and 2.8 rebounds in 17.6 minutes per game … Started twice and played in all five Orlando games, shooting 41.2 percent from the field. • Jack Cooley (2009-13), PF, Trabzonspor (Turkey): Averaged 7.0 points and 7.7 rebounds in three games of work with the Houston Rockets in Orlando while impressing scouts with his hustle in the summer league … He played 15.7 minutes per game and shot 50 percent from the field … Signed with a team in the Turkish Basketball League Aug. 11. • Ben Hansbrough (2008-11), G, Gran Canaria (Spain): Came off the bench four times for the Indiana Pacers in the summer league in Orlando after serving a similar role 28 times during the regular season earlier this year … Scored 2.3 points per game and had 0.8 assists in nine minutes per outing … Shot 30 percent from the field … Signed with Gran Canaria Aug. 22. • Carleton Scott (2007-11), F, Brooklyn Nets: Played in four games and started two of them with Brooklyn … Averaged 7.5 points, 2.8 rebounds and 0.3 assists on the floor … Played 25.8 minutes per outing and shot 45.5 percent from three-point land. ✦
