In what is considered the greatest game in Notre Dame Stadium's history, the No. 4-ranked Fighting
Irish upset No. 1 Miami, 31-30. Free safety Pat Terrell deflects the Hurricanes' two-point conversion attempt with 45 seconds left, and fullback Anthony Johnson pounces on the onside kick to end Miami's
36-game regular season winning streak, the second longest in college football since 1914 (the longest,
47 games by Oklahoma, also was snapped by Notre Dame, in 1957).
Tony Rice completes 8 of 16 passes for 195 yards and also runs for a score to give Notre Dame an early
7-0 lead. Rush backer Frank Stams leads a defensive effort that produces seven turnovers. Stams forces
two fumbles on sacks of quarterback Steve Walsh, and he tips another pass that Terrell returns for a
touchdown and a 21-7 lead.
After losing their four previous games to Miami 133-20, the Irish make the cover of Sports Illustrated
with the headline "Notre Dame Is Back."
