W By Brad Franklin hen Brent Urban decided to give football a try, he was a 6-4 freshman in high school who, like many Canadians, had a lot of experience with hockey. Now, the UVa fourth-year defensive tackle is making a name for himself among NFL scouts. But there's more to the 6-7, 295-pound Urban than just the aggression and athleticism with which he plays on the field. He's a thinker by nature and a music lover at heart. "When I was coaching the linebackers, I thought, 'Man, this guy would make a great offensive tackle,'" defensive line coach Vincent Brown said. "He's 280, 290 pounds and he's athletic. And then he started playing more and you saw the ability. "And then last year, it was more apparent that this kid's got tremendous upside. Coming into this year, my challenge to him was at the end of this season everyone should ask themselves where did this guy come from." When he can, he makes it out to concerts, though football makes that difficult. "I've been to a few festivals and things, but to me music is a big part of who I am and it's something I really enjoy. If I have a chance, I'll get out to a show," Urban said. "But I spend a lot of my time on football." And Brown said his message has been simple. "Like I've told every scout, the upside with him is off the charts," Brown said. "I've had several guys that have come in and asked how he compares to Matt Contrath, who was a great player for us. But Brent has physical tools that Conrath doesn't have and those are the things that have the scouts really intrigued with him." Being the easygoing music lover that he is, Urban doesn't get frustrated by much off the field. Though injuries have cost him at various points in his career, he tries not to get down.
